How Quickly Can I Be Seen?
We offer rapid-access appointments, and suspected wet AMD is treated as a priority. NICE guidance recommends urgent referral to a macula service, normally within one working day, because early treatment protects vision¹. If you have new distortion, a central dark patch or sudden central blur, contact us promptly and we prioritise rapid OCT assessment.
What Conditions Are Treated?
- Wet (neovascular) age-related macular degeneration.
- Macular oedema following retinal vein occlusion, including central and branch RVO.
- Diabetic macular oedema and selected other retinal causes of macular swelling.
Which Medicines Are Used?
Anti-VEGF medicines block the signal that drives leaking and abnormal vessels, and are strongly evidence-based for these conditions² ³. Depending on your diagnosis, previous treatment history and clinical findings, treatment may include medicines such as aflibercept, ranibizumab or faricimab, where clinically appropriate and available. Aflibercept (Eylea) is kept in stock at our Harley Street clinic, which supports prompt, and often same-day, treatment.
What Is Included?
Your pathway includes a consultant-led assessment, OCT imaging to confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment, the injection itself where appropriate, and a clear written treatment and monitoring plan. Injections are a quick outpatient procedure under anaesthetic drops.

Consultant-Led Care and Escalation
Care is led by consultant ophthalmologists, with more than 57,000 procedures performed across the group. Complex vitreoretinal care and escalation are led by Professor Mahmut Dogramaci, Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon, so that if your condition needs surgical retinal input it is managed within the same team.
Working With Your GP, Optometrist and NHS Team
Retinal vein occlusion and, less directly, AMD are linked to vascular health, so we communicate with your GP about blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular risk where relevant⁴. If you are under NHS care, we can work alongside it, and we keep your optometrist informed.
Private Anti-VEGF Injections Versus NHS Treatment
NHS macula services are excellent but are often under pressure, and appointment intervals can sometimes be longer than ideal. Private treatment offers rapid access, continuity with a named consultant and flexible scheduling, which matters most when a delay could cost vision. The medicines and the evidence base are the same; what differs is speed and continuity of care.
Can I Have Private Anti-VEGF Treatment While Under NHS Monitoring?
Yes. Many patients use private care to start or maintain treatment promptly while remaining under NHS review, or to bridge a gap. We keep your NHS team and optometrist informed, so your care is joined up, and tests are not needlessly repeated.
Second Opinion for Wet AMD or Retinal Vein Occlusion
If you would like a second opinion on your diagnosis, treatment plan or how your eye is responding, we are happy to review your scans and history and give a clear, independent view, working alongside your existing team.
Switching Anti-VEGF Medicine if Treatment Is Not Lasting
If the effect of your current injection is wearing off too soon, or fluid keeps returning, switching to a different anti-VEGF medicine or adjusting the interval can help. Your consultant reviews your OCT and your response and discusses whether a change is appropriate.
Same-Day OCT and Injection: When Is It Possible?
Because we perform OCT at assessment and keep aflibercept (Eylea) in stock at Harley Street, treatment can often begin on the same day when it is clinically appropriate, and you are ready to proceed. Your consultant confirms whether same-day treatment is right for you.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
Please bring a list of your medicines, details of any previous eye treatment or injections, your glasses, and the names of your GP and optometrist. Any recent scans or clinic letters help us avoid repeating tests.
