Cataract Surgery at Blue Fin Vision®

Private Cataract Surgery with Audited Outcomes in London, Hertfordshire & Essex

From Only £4,000 per eye

What Is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery removes the clouded lens from your eye and replaces it with a clear artificial lens, restoring sharp vision.

At Blue Fin Vision®, the procedure takes around 20 minutes under local anaesthetic. Most patients notice clearer sight within 24-48 hours, with full visual recovery in two to four weeks.

Our lead consultant has performed over 55,000 cataract and lens procedures using the refined 4-Minute Phaco™ technique, with complication rates three to five times below UK averages (independently audited through the National Ophthalmology Database).

Do You Have Cataracts?

Cataracts affect over half of adults by age 80, causing the eye’s natural lens to become cloudy. Unlike other eye conditions, cataracts cannot be treated with drops or medication – surgery is the only effective treatment.

Common signs include:

  • Persistent foggy or blurred vision
  • Increased glare from headlights or sunlight
  • Colours appearing faded or washed out
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Frequent changes to your glasses prescription

If any of these sound familiar, our free self-assessment can help you understand whether it’s time to consider surgery.

What Happens Next

  1. Complete your suitability check: Answer a few quick questions about your cataracts, current vision and lifestyle – takes under two minutes.
  2. Consultant-led review: Our ophthalmologists review your information alongside any existing prescriptions or scan results you provide.
  3. Personalised recommendation: You receive a clear explanation of whether cataract surgery is suitable, which lens types may suit you, and transparent pricing for your situation.
  4. In-person consultation (optional): If you wish to proceed, we arrange a detailed assessment at your nearest Blue Fin Vision® clinic. No obligation, no pressure.

NHS vs Private Cataract Surgery

In the UK, cataract surgery is available on the NHS once your vision meets specific thresholds, typically with a standard monofocal lens that restores clarity at one distance. Private surgery offers shorter waiting times, a wider choice of lenses, and continuity with the same consultant throughout.

The 4-Minute Phaco™ Technique

4-Minute Phaco™ is a precision-based, low-trauma cataract technique developed over more than 55,000 procedures. The name reflects the consistency of the approach – speed is an outcome of refined technique, not a goal in itself.

What this means for you:

  • Faster visual recovery, often noticeably clearer within 24-48 hours
  • Reduced inflammation and corneal stress
  • Lower complication rates – 99.8% of patients complete surgery without complication (NOD 2024-25)

Seeing is Believing: A Surgeon’s Experience with ZEISS AT LISA Trifocal Lenses

Our lead consultant is one of several leading ophthalmologists, including international specialists, who trust their own sight to the same ZEISS lenses they recommend to patients. Having undergone cataract surgery himself, he chose ZEISS AT LISA trifocal lenses – the same premium optics available to every Blue Fin Vision® patient. Further detail published by ZEISS Meditec.

Your Lens Options

Every Blue Fin Vision® patient receives ZEISS premium intraocular lenses – the same optics trusted by leading university eye units worldwide.

Available options include:

  • Monofocal Lenses: Clear vision at one set distance (usually far), with glasses for reading
  • Trifocal Lenses: Sharp vision at near, intermediate and distance, reducing or eliminating glasses dependence
  • Extended Depth of Focus Lenses: Smooth vision across a continuous range
  • Toric Lenses: Correct astigmatism alongside your cataract

Your consultant will recommend the best option based on your eye health, lifestyle and visual goals.

What to Expect

Before Surgery

Every patient receives a comprehensive diagnostic assessment using Pentacam corneal mapping, OCT retinal imaging and dual biometry (measurements taken twice for precision). This ensures accurate lens selection and identifies any factors that could affect your outcome.

During Surgery

The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes under local anaesthetic drops – no injections around the eye. Through a micro-incision of around 2.2mm, your clouded lens is gently broken up using ultrasound and removed, then replaced with your chosen ZEISS lens. Most patients report feeling only slight pressure, with no pain.

After Surgery

You’ll rest in a private, en-suite recovery room before going home the same day. We provide:

  • All post-operative drops at no extra cost
  • A three-course meal for you and your companion
  • A celebratory bottle of champagne
  • Detailed aftercare instructions
  • Direct access to our team for any concerns

Most patients notice improved vision within 24-48 hours, with full recovery in two to four weeks.

Secondary Cataract (PCO)

In some patients, the capsule holding the new lens becomes slightly cloudy months or years after surgery – sometimes called secondary cataract or posterior capsule opacification.

This is easily treated with a five-minute YAG laser capsulotomy, which restores clarity within 24 hours. If your original surgery was performed at Blue Fin Vision®, this treatment is provided at no additional cost.

After a Second Opinion?

If you’ve been quoted for cataract surgery elsewhere, or told to wait longer on the NHS, we’re happy to offer an independent assessment. Many patients visit Blue Fin Vision® for a second opinion on lens choice, surgical approach or timing.

Both Eyes in One Session (ISBCS)

Blue Fin Vision® offers the option to treat both eyes in a single session – a technique known as Immediate Sequential Bilateral Cataract Surgery (ISBCS). This reduces overall recovery time and minimises disruption to your daily life.

ISBCS follows the same rigorous protocols as standard surgery, with each eye treated as a separate procedure using fresh instruments, drapes and solutions. This approach is suitable for selected patients and is discussed during your consultation.

Cataract Surgery with Fuchs' Endothelial Dystrophy

Cataract surgery in patients with Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy requires a highly individualised approach. At Blue Fin Vision®, advanced diagnostic technologies including specular microscopy and anterior segment OCT are used to assess corneal endothelial health before surgery.

This detailed assessment guides whether cataract surgery alone is suitable, or whether a combined procedure such as Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) may be needed. Endothelial-protective surgical techniques and careful lens selection help minimise risks such as corneal oedema.

Post-operatively, patients benefit from structured follow-up with endothelial cell monitoring to ensure ongoing corneal health and optimal visual recovery.

Post-Surgery Enhancement Options

In approximately 5% of cataract surgeries, the final prescription may not achieve the intended near-zero target. If a residual refractive error of 1 dioptre or more remains, Blue Fin Vision® offers enhancement options to fine-tune your vision.

Enhancement options include:

  • Laser eye surgery: A precise procedure to correct residual refractive errors
  • Piggyback Sulcoflex lens: An additional lens implanted to adjust vision without removing the original

Sulcoflex trifocal upgrade: For patients who initially received a monofocal lens and now wish to reduce dependence on reading glasses, a Sulcoflex trifocal piggyback lens can be added to provide near and intermediate vision.

Your consultant will recommend the most suitable option based on your individual needs and eye health.
