Conjunctival Naevus Removal at Blue Fin Vision®

Expert Eye Freckle Treatment in London, Hertfordshire & Essex

From Only £1,000 per eye

What Is a Conjunctival Naevus?

A conjunctival naevus (eye freckle) is a pigmented spot on the white of the eye.

Most are benign and cause no symptoms, but some patients seek removal for cosmetic reasons or to rule out the rare possibility of malignancy. Blue Fin Vision® is the principal UK clinic for conjunctival naevus removal, having successfully treated hundreds of patients – more than any other provider.

Common characteristics include:

  • A visible spot or freckle on the eye surface
  • Possible slight discomfort or irritation
  • Potential changes in size, shape or colour over time

Conjunctival naevus removal is usually considered elective in the UK and not funded by the NHS unless malignancy is suspected. Blue Fin Vision® offers prompt private access to advanced argon laser treatment or surgical excision, with full histopathology for diagnostic confirmation.

Treatment Options

Argon Laser Thermocoagulation

Our preferred method for most conjunctival naevi. Argon laser treatment offers:

  • Precise targeting of the naevus with minimal impact on surrounding tissue
  • Short procedure time (approximately 30 minutes)
  • Outpatient treatment with rapid recovery
  • Excellent cosmetic results for flat or lightly pigmented naevi

Surgical Excision

Recommended for raised, thick or complex naevi where laser treatment is not suitable:

  • Microsurgical precision for optimal cosmetic results
  • All excised tissue sent for histopathology to confirm diagnosis
  • Appropriate when malignancy needs to be formally excluded

Your consultant will recommend the most suitable approach based on the size, depth and characteristics of your naevus.

What to Expect

Before the Procedure

Your consultant examines the naevus using slit-lamp imaging to assess size, depth and pigmentation. You receive a detailed explanation of which treatment is recommended and why. Formal consent follows UK ophthalmic guidelines.

During the Procedure

For argon laser treatment:

  1. Preparation: Anaesthetic drops numb your eye – you feel no pain
  2. Laser application: The argon laser precisely targets the pigmented cells
  3. Monitoring: Your consultant monitors progress throughout
  4. Completion: The procedure typically takes around 30 minutes

For surgical excision: The naevus is carefully removed under local anaesthetic using microsurgical techniques. The tissue is sent for histopathology analysis.

After the Procedure

You can go home the same day. We provide:

  • Post-procedure drops and aftercare instructions
  • Follow-up appointment to assess healing
  • Histopathology results (for excised tissue)
  • Direct access to our team for any concerns

Most patients experience mild redness for a few days, with full healing over the following weeks.

Recurrence Policy

Pigmented cells can occasionally regrow after treatment. Blue Fin Vision® offers a unique recurrence policy:

  • Free retreatment within the first year
  • 50% off retreatment after the first year

This reflects our confidence in our outcomes and our commitment to achieving the best possible result for every patient.

This large, elevated conjunctival naevus appeared suspicious for a choroidal melanoma extruding through the sclera. Biopsy confirmed a conjunctival naevus, which was surgically excised as it was too thick for argon laser treatment.

The lesion was too deep in the conjunctiva and required surgical excision.
