PRK Laser Eye Surgery at Blue Fin Vision®

Freedom from Glasses with PRK in London, Hertfordshire & Essex

From Only £2,250 per eye

What Is PRK?

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) reshapes your cornea using an excimer laser without creating a flap, making it ideal for patients with thinner corneas or active lifestyles.

The procedure takes around 15 minutes per eye, with most patients achieving significantly improved vision within 7-10 days – reducing or eliminating dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

Unlike LASIK, PRK removes the thin outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) before reshaping, eliminating flap-related risks. The epithelium regrows naturally over several days. Long-term visual outcomes are comparable to LASIK.

Our lead consultant has performed over 55,000 vision correction procedures with complication rates three to five times below UK averages (independently audited through the National Ophthalmology Database).

Is PRK Right for You?

PRK is often recommended when LASIK is not suitable. It typically suits patients aged 21-45 with:

  • Thinner corneas unsuitable for flap creation
  • Active lifestyles or occupations with higher risk of eye trauma (e.g., contact sports, military, police)
  • Mild corneal surface irregularities
  • Previous LASIK complications requiring retreatment

PRK can correct:

  • Short-sightedness (myopia) up to approximately -8.00 D
  • Long-sightedness (hyperopia) up to approximately +4.00 D
  • Astigmatism up to approximately 6.00 D

Recovery takes longer than LASIK (days rather than hours), but final visual outcomes are equally impressive.

What to Expect

Before Surgery

Your complimentary consultation includes corneal topography, pachymetry (thickness measurement) and detailed prescription assessment. Your consultant explains the procedure; the longer recovery timeline compared to LASIK and answers all questions. Formal consent follows UK refractive standards, including a seven-day cooling-off period.

During Surgery

The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes per eye:

  1. Preparation: Anaesthetic drops numb your eyes – you feel no pain
  2. Epithelial removal: The thin outer layer of the cornea is gently removed
  3. Reshaping: An excimer laser precisely reshapes the underlying corneal tissue
  4. Protection: A soft bandage contact lens is placed to protect the eye while the epithelium regrows

After Surgery

You’ll rest in a private, en-suite recovery room before going home the same day. We provide:

  • All post-operative drops included
  • A three-course meal for you and your companion
  • A celebratory bottle of champagne
  • Protective bandage contact lens (removed at follow-up)
  • Structured follow-up appointments
  • Direct access to our team for any concerns

The first few days can be uncomfortable as your cornea heals. Most patients notice significant improvement within 7-10 days, with vision continuing to stabilise over the following weeks.

Recovery and Results

  • Days 1-3: Discomfort, light sensitivity and blurred vision are normal – rest and use prescribed drops
  • Days 4-7: Bandage contact lens removed, vision begins to clear
  • Weeks 2-4: Vision continues to stabilise, most patients return to normal activities
  • Months 1-3: Final visual outcome achieved – many patients reach 20/20 or better

PRK recovery takes longer than LASIK, but long-term results are equivalent. The absence of a flap means the cornea retains more structural strength.

Patient Experience

“I woke up to already have impeccable vision. It was less than 12 hours later, and I went in for my check up and was reading better than 20/20 on my right eye and at 20/20 on my left eye.

The surgery is somewhat of a miracle. The fact I’ve been afforded perfect sight at the age of 30 having been wearing glasses all day every day for a decade is the stuff of miracles.

Would recommend – 5 stars!!”

PRK FAQs

What is PRK laser eye surgery?

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a surface laser procedure that corrects short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not create a corneal flap. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea is gently removed, the laser reshapes the underlying tissue, and the surface regenerates naturally over 3–5 days.

Both procedures achieve similar visual outcomes, but PRK has a longer initial recovery period of 5–7 days compared to 1–2 days for LASIK. PRK preserves more corneal strength and avoids all flap-related risks, making it ideal for patients with thinner corneas or active lifestyles involving contact sports.

PRK is particularly well-suited for patients with thinner corneas unsuitable for LASIK, athletes in contact sports, military personnel and those who prefer avoiding flap creation. You should have a stable prescription for at least 12 months and be aged 21 or over with healthy eyes.

PRK is not painful during the procedure due to anaesthetic drops. However, the first 2–3 days can be uncomfortable as the surface epithelium regenerates. Symptoms include stinging, light sensitivity and watering. These are well-managed with prescribed pain relief and lubricating drops, and discomfort typically eases substantially by day 4–5.

The first few days require rest with eyes closed. A bandage contact lens protects the healing surface and is removed around day 4–5. Most patients return to work within 5–7 days and can drive after 2–3 weeks. Full visual stabilisation takes 3–6 months.

PRK achieves excellent outcomes equivalent to LASIK, with over 95% of patients achieving 20/20 vision or better. Results are permanent with excellent long-term stability. The visual outcome is the same as LASIK; only the recovery timeline differs.

Common temporary effects include discomfort during healing, dry eyes and visual fluctuation. Corneal haze can occur but is rare with modern techniques. PRK avoids all flap-related complications, making it an excellent choice for those concerned about flap risks.

Most patients require 5–7 days off work, compared to 1–2 days for LASIK. If your work involves dusty or physical environments, you may need slightly longer. Your consultant will advise based on your occupation.

Neither is universally better. PRK is preferred for thinner corneas, active lifestyles with trauma risk, and those wanting to avoid flap creation. LASIK offers faster recovery. Both achieve equivalent long-term visual outcomes. Your consultant will recommend the most suitable option.

PRK permanently reshapes the cornea and results are stable long-term. PRK’s preservation of corneal biomechanics may offer advantages for stability, particularly in higher prescriptions. Natural age-related changes will still occur over time.
