What is LASEK?
LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy) is an advanced laser eye surgery that combines the benefits of PRK and LASIK to correct myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), and astigmatism. This procedure offers several advantages over traditional laser eye surgeries, making it an excellent choice for those seeking an effective solution to their vision problems.
LASEK is particularly beneficial for patients who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK due to corneal thickness or other factors. It provides a safe and effective alternative with comparable results to other laser eye surgeries. Unlike LASIK, LASEK doesn’t involve creating a corneal flap.
Key Benefits of LASEK:
- Suitable for patients with thin corneas or large pupils
- Lower risk of dry eye symptoms
- No corneal flap creation, reducing the risk of flap-related complications
- Shorter healing time compared to other laser eye surgeries
- Ideal for patients at higher risk of eye trauma, such as athletes
- Excellent visual outcomes for treating short-sightedness and astigmatism

At Blue Fin Vision®, we utilise cutting-edge technology to ensure the utmost precision and safety during No-Touch LASEK surgery in London, Chelmsford, and Hatfield. This advanced procedure, also known as Transepithelial PRK (TransPRK), offers excellent outcomes with a sophisticated approach to corneal reshaping.
Understanding No-Touch LASEK
No-Touch LASEK is a revolutionary ‘no-touch’ technique for surface laser treatments. This newer version of LASEK applies laser light directly to the surface of the eye, eliminating the need for manual removal of the surface layer. This advanced approach offers several benefits:
- Quicker Treatment: Both eyes can be completed in under 10 minutes.
- Reduced Risk: The ‘no-touch’ technique minimises the risk of complications associated with manual handling.
- Enhanced Precision: Direct laser application ensures highly accurate corneal reshaping.
The No-Touch LASEK Procedure: Step-by-Step
Here’s a detailed overview of the No-Touch LASEK procedure at Blue Fin Vision®:
- Preparation: Your eyes will be numbed with anaesthetic drops, ensuring a comfortable experience.
- Direct Laser Application: Unlike traditional LASEK, there’s no need for alcohol solution or manual epithelial manipulation. The laser is applied directly to the eye’s surface.
- Corneal Reshaping: An excimer laser precisely reshapes the cornea according to your unique vision prescription.
- Natural Healing: The epithelium naturally regenerates over the treated area, acting as a protective layer.
The entire procedure typically takes about 10 minutes for both eyes, performed under local anaesthetic. This is significantly quicker than traditional LASEK methods.
The Morning After...
I've been waiting to hit the one month mark before writing this review because I wanted to feel out the full experience and road to recovery so I can give my best help and advice to people considering it all. I've been absolutely THRILLED with everything and particularly with choosing Mr Mfazo Hove as my surgeon.
Pre operation and consultation was attentive and all explained very well to me. He showed me a video which at the time I sort of thought I'd rather have not watched but on reflection I think it was valuable to really have me understand and know what's going on both during the surgery and just in my general decision making. He answered all and any questions and never felt rushed or like he was trying to get through a "process" as quick as possible.
The surgery went very well. He was confident and reassuring without pandering too much or giving too much weight to my nerves. It felt swift but safe. The operation was 20-30 minutes to my memory but that's just a guess. It was certainly fairly quick. I was very nervous inside and the operation is certainly peculiar and a little uncomfortable conceptually but physically it was painless and at worst there was mild discomfort with your eye being held open. None of the laser or flap removal was painful (I got LASIK).
Already post op I could see but with blurred vision and I found it far more comfortable to keep my eyes closed and rest them. I went to bed that night and woke up to already have impeccable vision. It was less than 12 hours later and I went in for my check up and was reading better than 20/20 on my right eye and at 20/20 on my left eye (or maybe the other way round but the point is it was bloody good!).
The weeks that followed were interesting because, probably partially to do with such exceptional early results, I had some frustrations with slight blurriness here and there. I went in to see Mr Hove and he reassured me that it was just to do with dryness and a surface issue. It was reassuring to be able to follow up with him in person and be sure and, as predicted, my eyes are now feeling really solid at the month mark.
Overall, I feel the surgery is somewhat of a miracle. Of course we just live in incredible times medically but conceptually the fact I've been afforded perfect sight at the age of 30 having been wearing glasses all day everyday for a decade is the stuff of miracles. Looking forward to my (probably) final checkup and thanking Mr Hove as I go on to hopefully enjoy my vision for years to come.

Recovery and Results
It’s important to note that vision recovery after No-Touch LASEK is slower compared to LASIK:
- Initial Recovery: The first 24 hours can be painful as the epithelium regenerates.
- Gradual Improvement: Most patients achieve significantly improved vision within a week, with vision continuing to stabilise over the following weeks.
- Long-term Outcomes: Despite the slower initial recovery, No-Touch LASEK offers excellent long-term vision correction results.

LASEK FAQs
What is No-Touch LASEK eye surgery?
No-Touch LASEK is an advanced surface laser procedure that corrects short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. Unlike traditional LASEK, which uses a dilute alcohol solution to loosen the outer corneal layer, No-Touch LASEK removes the surface layer entirely using a laser. This eliminates any manual contact with the eye, enhancing precision and comfort.
How does No-Touch LASEK differ from PRK and LASIK?
No-Touch LASEK and PRK produce very similar outcomes and recovery experiences. Both are surface procedures without a flap, offering excellent corneal stability. The key difference is that No-Touch LASEK uses a laser to remove the epithelium rather than manual techniques. LASIK creates a flap, allowing faster recovery but with flap-related considerations.
What are the benefits of No-Touch LASEK?
No-Touch LASEK avoids flap creation, preserves corneal strength and is suitable for thinner corneas. The entirely laser-based approach means no instruments touch the eye, reducing discomfort and infection risk. It carries lower dry eye risk than LASIK and is ideal for active lifestyles or occupations where eye trauma is possible.
Who is suitable for No-Touch LASEK?
No-Touch LASEK suits patients aged 21 or over with stable prescriptions who have thinner corneas, participate in contact sports, work in military or emergency services, or prefer flapless surgery. A comprehensive assessment confirms your suitability.
Is No-Touch LASEK painful?
No-Touch LASEK is painless during the procedure. The first 2–3 days can be uncomfortable as the surface heals, with stinging, light sensitivity and watering. Prescribed pain relief and lubricating drops manage these symptoms effectively, and discomfort typically improves significantly by day 4–5.
How long does No-Touch LASEK recovery take?
Most patients return to work within 5–7 days and can drive after 2–3 weeks. Full visual stabilisation takes 3–6 months. The initial recovery is slower than LASIK, but long-term outcomes are equivalent.
What results can I expect from No-Touch LASEK?
No-Touch LASEK delivers excellent results equivalent to LASIK and PRK, with over 95% of patients achieving 20/20 vision or better. Results are permanent with excellent long-term stability.
What are the risks of No-Touch LASEK?
Temporary effects include discomfort during healing, dry eyes and fluctuating vision. No-Touch LASEK avoids all flap-related complications. Serious risks such as infection or corneal haze are rare with modern techniques.
How long do No-Touch LASEK results last?
No-Touch LASEK permanently reshapes the cornea. Results are stable long-term, with excellent biomechanical preservation. Natural age-related changes such as presbyopia will still occur over time.
What alternatives are available if No-Touch LASEK is not suitable?
Blue Fin Vision® offers LASIK, SMILE, implantable contact lenses and refractive lens exchange as alternatives. Your consultant recommends the most appropriate treatment for your needs.
