The Blue Fin Vision® LASIK Experience

Every patient follows a consultant‑led pathway with corneal mapping, formal consent per UK refractive guidelines (including 7‑day cooling‑off), and Ziemer Z8 flap creation. At Blue Fin Vision® Eye Clinic, we use state-of-the-art technology to ensure the highest level of precision and safety during surgery. LASIK combines speed, comfort, and quick recovery.

Here’s a step-by-step overview of the procedure:

  1. Preparation: Your eyes will be numbed with anaesthetic drops, ensuring a comfortable experience.
  2. Creating the Corneal Flap: A femtosecond laser creates a thin, hinged flap in the cornea.
  3. Corneal Reshaping: The flap is gently lifted, and an excimer laser precisely reshapes the underlying corneal tissue according to your unique vision prescription.
  4. Flap Repositioning: The corneal flap is carefully replaced, acting as a natural bandage.

The entire procedure takes just 15 minutes for both eyes, performed under local anaesthetic, and most patients experience improved vision almost immediately.

Introducing the Ziemer Z8: Cutting-Edge Technology

Blue Fin Vision® is proud to offer the latest advancement in LASIK technology – the Ziemer Z8 femtosecond laser. This innovative equipment represents the pinnacle of precision in flap creation, ensuring unparalleled accuracy and safety during your procedure. The Ziemer Z8 delivers:

  • Enhanced precision for optimal corneal flap creation.
  • Minimised risk of complications due to its advanced design.
  • Improved patient comfort with faster treatment times.

By integrating this cutting-edge technology into our procedures, we continue to set the standard for excellence in laser eye surgery.

The Morning After...

I've been waiting to hit the one month mark before writing this review because I wanted to feel out the full experience and road to recovery so I can give my best help and advice to people considering it all. I've been absolutely THRILLED with everything and particularly with choosing Mr Mfazo Hove as my surgeon.

Pre operation and consultation was attentive and all explained very well to me. He showed me a video which at the time I sort of thought I'd rather have not watched but on reflection I think it was valuable to really have me understand and know what's going on both during the surgery and just in my general decision making. He answered all and any questions and never felt rushed or like he was trying to get through a "process" as quick as possible.

The surgery went very well. He was confident and reassuring without pandering too much or giving too much weight to my nerves. It felt swift but safe. The operation was 20-30 minutes to my memory but that's just a guess. It was certainly fairly quick. I was very nervous inside and the operation is certainly peculiar and a little uncomfortable conceptually but physically it was painless and at worst there was mild discomfort with your eye being held open. None of the laser or flap removal was painful (I got LASIK).

Already post op I could see but with blurred vision and I found it far more comfortable to keep my eyes closed and rest them. I went to bed that night and woke up to already have impeccable vision. It was less than 12 hours later and I went in for my check up and was reading better than 20/20 on my right eye and at 20/20 on my left eye (or maybe the other way round but the point is it was bloody good!).

The weeks that followed were interesting because, probably partially to do with such exceptional early results, I had some frustrations with slight blurriness here and there. I went in to see Mr Hove and he reassured me that it was just to do with dryness and a surface issue. It was reassuring to be able to follow up with him in person and be sure and, as predicted, my eyes are now feeling really solid at the month mark.

Overall, I feel the surgery is somewhat of a miracle. Of course we just live in incredible times medically but conceptually the fact I've been afforded perfect sight at the age of 30 having been wearing glasses all day everyday for a decade is the stuff of miracles. Looking forward to my (probably) final checkup and thanking Mr Hove as I go on to hopefully enjoy my vision for years to come.

Would recommend - 5 stars!!

LASIK FAQs

What is LASIK laser eye surgery?

LASIK is the most widely performed laser eye surgery worldwide. It corrects short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism by creating a thin protective flap on the cornea, then using an excimer laser to reshape the underlying tissue. The flap is repositioned and heals naturally without stitches, allowing rapid visual recovery.

You are likely suitable if you are aged 21 or over, have had a stable prescription for at least 12 months, and have adequate corneal thickness with a normal corneal shape. LASIK may not be suitable if you have thin or irregular corneas, severe dry eye, or participate in activities with high risk of eye trauma. A comprehensive assessment at Blue Fin Vision® will confirm your suitability.

Anaesthetic drops numb your eyes completely. A femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap in approximately 10 seconds, then an excimer laser reshapes the underlying cornea according to your prescription. The flap is repositioned and adheres naturally. The entire procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes for both eyes, and you remain awake throughout.

LASIK is not painful. The anaesthetic drops ensure you feel no pain during the procedure, only slight pressure. Afterwards, most patients experience mild grittiness or foreign body sensation for 2–4 hours, easily managed with lubricating drops. By the next day, most patients feel comfortable.

Most patients notice dramatically improved vision within hours of surgery. Many achieve driving standard vision within 24 hours and return to work within 1–2 days. Mild grittiness and light sensitivity are normal for the first day or two. Vision typically reaches optimal clarity within 2–4 weeks, with final stabilisation over 1–3 months.

Over 96% of LASIK patients achieve 20/20 vision or better, and satisfaction rates exceed 95%. Results are permanent, though reading glasses may be needed after age 45 due to natural presbyopia. Approximately 5% of patients may benefit from enhancement surgery to fine-tune results.

Common temporary side effects include dry eyes and halos around lights, which typically improve within 3–6 months. Rare complications include flap-related issues, infection and corneal ectasia. Thorough pre-operative screening identifies risk factors and ensures LASIK is only offered to suitable candidates.

LASIK permanently reshapes your cornea and the correction does not reverse. Most patients enjoy stable vision for many years or decades. Natural age-related changes such as presbyopia and cataracts will still occur over time, but these are separate from your LASIK correction.

Yes. Both eyes are routinely treated with LASIK laser eye surgery during the same session, which takes approximately 15–20 minutes in total. This approach is safe, convenient and allows both eyes to recover together.

Blue Fin Vision® offers excellent alternatives including PRK, LASEK, SMILE, implantable contact lenses and refractive lens exchange. Your consultant will discuss all suitable options during your assessment, ensuring you receive the best treatment for your individual circumstances.
