What Is LASIK?
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) reshapes your cornea through a thin flap to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.
The procedure takes around 15 minutes for both eyes, and most patients notice dramatically clearer vision within hours – reducing or eliminating dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
LASIK is our most popular laser treatment, combining rapid recovery with minimal discomfort. Many patients return to work within 24-48 hours and achieve 20/20 vision or better.
Our lead consultant has performed over 55,000 vision correction procedures with complication rates three to five times below UK averages (independently audited through the National Ophthalmology Database).
Is LASIK Right for You?
LASIK typically suits patients aged 21-45 with stable prescriptions. It can correct:
- Short-sightedness (myopia) up to approximately -10.00 D
- Long-sightedness (hyperopia) up to approximately +4.00 D
- Astigmatism up to approximately 6.00 D
You may be better suited to another procedure if you have:
- Thin corneas or irregular corneal shape
- Severe dry eye
- Active lifestyle with high risk of eye trauma
- Certain medical conditions affecting healing
In these cases, PRK, LASEK or SMILE may be better options – your consultant will advise.

The Ziemer Z8 Femtosecond Laser
Blue Fin Vision® uses the Ziemer Z8 femtosecond laser for flap creation – one of the most advanced platforms available. This technology delivers:
- Enhanced precision: Consistent, accurate corneal flap creation
- Reduced risk: Advanced design minimises flap-related complications
- Improved comfort: Faster treatment times with minimal pressure on the eye
The Ziemer Z8 creates thinner, more uniform flaps than older microkeratome techniques, preserving more corneal tissue and improving long-term stability.
What to Expect
Before Surgery
Your complimentary consultation includes corneal topography, pachymetry (thickness measurement) and detailed prescription assessment. Your consultant explains the procedure and answers all questions. Formal consent follows UK refractive standards, including a seven-day cooling-off period.
During Surgery
The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes for both eyes:
- Preparation: Anaesthetic drops numb your eyes – you feel no pain
- Flap creation: The Ziemer Z8 femtosecond laser creates a thin, hinged flap in the cornea
- Reshaping: The flap is lifted and an excimer laser precisely reshapes the underlying tissue
- Repositioning: The flap is replaced, acting as a natural bandage
Most patients experience only mild pressure and see clearer vision almost immediately.
After Surgery
You’ll rest in a private, en-suite recovery room before going home the same day. We provide:
- All post-operative drops included
- A three-course meal for you and your companion
- A celebratory bottle of champagne
- Structured follow-up appointments
- Direct access to our team for any concerns
Most patients notice significant improvement within hours, with vision continuing to stabilise over the following days.
Recovery and Results
- First 24 hours: Minimal discomfort, significantly improved vision – avoid rubbing your eyes and wear protective shields when sleeping
- First week: Vision continues to stabilise, attend your follow-up appointment
- First month: Most patients achieve stable 20/20 vision or better
Long-term outcomes are excellent, with high patient satisfaction due to rapid recovery and lasting results.

Patient Experience
“I woke up to already have impeccable vision. It was less than 12 hours later, and I went in for my check up and was reading better than 20/20 on my right eye and at 20/20 on my left eye.
The surgery is somewhat of a miracle. The fact I’ve been afforded perfect sight at the age of 30 having been wearing glasses all day every day for a decade is the stuff of miracles.
Would recommend – 5 stars!!”

LASIK FAQs
What is LASIK laser eye surgery?
LASIK is the most widely performed laser eye surgery worldwide. It corrects short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism by creating a thin protective flap on the cornea, then using an excimer laser to reshape the underlying tissue. The flap is repositioned and heals naturally without stitches, allowing rapid visual recovery.
How do I know if I am suitable for LASIK?
You are likely suitable if you are aged 21 or over, have had a stable prescription for at least 12 months, and have adequate corneal thickness with a normal corneal shape. LASIK may not be suitable if you have thin or irregular corneas, severe dry eye, or participate in activities with high risk of eye trauma. A comprehensive assessment at Blue Fin Vision® will confirm your suitability.
What happens during the LASIK procedure?
Anaesthetic drops numb your eyes completely. A femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap in approximately 10 seconds, then an excimer laser reshapes the underlying cornea according to your prescription. The flap is repositioned and adheres naturally. The entire procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes for both eyes, and you remain awake throughout.
Does LASIK hurt?
LASIK is not painful. The anaesthetic drops ensure you feel no pain during the procedure, only slight pressure. Afterwards, most patients experience mild grittiness or foreign body sensation for 2–4 hours, easily managed with lubricating drops. By the next day, most patients feel comfortable.
What can I expect during LASIK recovery?
Most patients notice dramatically improved vision within hours of surgery. Many achieve driving standard vision within 24 hours and return to work within 1–2 days. Mild grittiness and light sensitivity are normal for the first day or two. Vision typically reaches optimal clarity within 2–4 weeks, with final stabilisation over 1–3 months.
What results can I expect from LASIK?
Over 96% of LASIK patients achieve 20/20 vision or better, and satisfaction rates exceed 95%. Results are permanent, though reading glasses may be needed after age 45 due to natural presbyopia. Approximately 5% of patients may benefit from enhancement surgery to fine-tune results.
What are the risks of LASIK?
Common temporary side effects include dry eyes and halos around lights, which typically improve within 3–6 months. Rare complications include flap-related issues, infection and corneal ectasia. Thorough pre-operative screening identifies risk factors and ensures LASIK is only offered to suitable candidates.
How long do LASIK results last?
LASIK permanently reshapes your cornea and the correction does not reverse. Most patients enjoy stable vision for many years or decades. Natural age-related changes such as presbyopia and cataracts will still occur over time, but these are separate from your LASIK correction.
Can both eyes be treated with LASIK at the same time?
Yes. Both eyes are routinely treated with LASIK laser eye surgery during the same session, which takes approximately 15–20 minutes in total. This approach is safe, convenient and allows both eyes to recover together.
What if I am not suitable for LASIK?
Blue Fin Vision® offers excellent alternatives including PRK, LASEK, SMILE, implantable contact lenses and refractive lens exchange. Your consultant will discuss all suitable options during your assessment, ensuring you receive the best treatment for your individual circumstances.
