Medical Retina at Blue Fin Vision®
Private Retina Care in London, Hertfordshire & Essex
What Is Medical Retina?
Medical retina refers to the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of conditions affecting the retina – the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye responsible for capturing images and sending them to your brain. When retinal conditions develop, they can significantly impact your central and peripheral vision.
Blue Fin Vision® provides consultant-led medical retina care across London, Hertfordshire and Essex. We offer advanced diagnostic imaging, intravitreal injections and laser treatments to manage conditions including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions.
NHS diabetic retinopathy screening is free, but specialist referrals often face long waits. Private care at Blue Fin Vision® provides immediate consultant review and faster access to intravitreal injections for AMD or macular oedema.
Our lead consultant has performed over 55,000 eye procedures with complication rates three to five times below UK averages (independently audited through the National Ophthalmology Database).

Each condition requires a personalised approach. Your consultant will explain your diagnosis, treatment options and expected outcomes clearly.
Do You Need Medical Retina Care?
You may benefit from medical retina assessment if you have:
- Sudden changes in vision or new floaters
- Distorted or wavy central vision
- Blank spots or shadows in your vision
- Diabetes and concerns about retinal health
- Family history of macular degeneration
- Previous retinal condition requiring monitoring
- Need for ongoing intravitreal injection treatment
Prompt assessment is important for many retinal conditions – early treatment often leads to better outcomes.
What Happens Next
- Comprehensive assessment: Your consultant conducts a thorough examination including OCT imaging, retinal photography and clinical examination
- Diagnosis: We identify the condition and explain what it means for your vision
- Personalised treatment plan: A tailored strategy which may include monitoring, injections or laser treatment
- Ongoing care: Regular follow-ups to track response and adjust treatment as needed
Diagnostic Services
Blue Fin Vision® uses advanced imaging to assess retinal health:
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) – detailed cross-sectional imaging of the retina
- Retinal photography – high-resolution images to monitor changes over time
- Fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) – dye-based imaging of retinal blood vessels
- Clinical examination with dilated fundoscopy
Accurate diagnosis guides effective treatment.
Treatment Options
Intravitreal Injections
Anti-VEGF and steroid injections are delivered directly into the eye to treat wet AMD, diabetic macular oedema, retinal vein occlusions and other conditions. These treatments can slow disease progression and, in many cases, improve vision.
Injections are delivered under sterile protocols with outcome audits to ensure safety. Most patients require a course of injections, with frequency determined by treatment response.
Laser Treatments
Panretinal Photocoagulation (PRP): Used primarily for proliferative diabetic retinopathy to reduce abnormal blood vessel growth and prevent further vision loss.
Focal Laser: Targeted laser therapy for diabetic maculopathy and other vascular retinal conditions.
Monitoring
Some retinal conditions are best managed with careful monitoring rather than immediate treatment. Regular imaging tracks any progression so treatment can begin promptly if needed.
What to Expect
Before Treatment
Your consultation includes comprehensive retinal imaging and clinical examination. Your consultant explains your diagnosis, treatment options and what to expect. Formal consent follows GMC and RCOphth guidelines, including discussion of risks such as infection or vision changes.
During Treatment
- Intravitreal injections: Anaesthetic drops numb your eye. The injection takes seconds. You may feel pressure but not pain. The appointment takes approximately 30 minutes in total.
- Laser treatment: Anaesthetic drops are applied. You may see bright flashes during treatment. Sessions typically take 15-30 minutes.
After Treatment
- Mild discomfort or grittiness for a few hours (injections)
- Follow-up appointments to assess response
- Ongoing monitoring and repeat treatments as indicated
- Direct access to our team for any concerns
