Pinguecula removal is usually performed for appearance, irritation, inflammation or contact lens intolerance. It is not normally a vision-improving treatment: a pinguecula is benign, does not usually grow onto the cornea and does not usually affect visual acuity.
What is a Pinguecula?
A pinguecula is a yellowish, slightly raised deposit on the conjunctiva, the clear tissue over the white of the eye, usually on the nasal side.¹ It is very common: around one in five people in some populations,¹ and long-term ultraviolet exposure is a major factor.² A pinguecula is benign and does not usually affect vision.³
Treatment Options and What Drives the Price
Many pingueculae need no treatment beyond lubrication and sun protection.⁴ When a pinguecula is persistently inflamed or cosmetically bothersome, two options are used at Blue Fin Vision®: surgical excision, and argon laser treatment. Private pinguecula surgery by excision suits some lesions, while argon laser is a quick, minimally invasive option offered at The Harley Street Eye Centre, where a complimentary second treatment is included within 12 months if further treatment is needed. The price of pinguecula removal depends on the technique, the number of lesions and the aftercare included.

Is a pinguecula dangerous?
No. It is a benign, ultraviolet-related deposit and does not usually affect sight.³ Treatment is for comfort or appearance.
Argon laser or surgical excision: which is better?
It depends on the size and nature of the lesion. Argon laser is quick and minimally invasive and is offered at Harley Street; surgical excision suits some lesions better. Your consultant advises at assessment.
Is a second treatment included?
Where argon laser is used at our Harley Street clinic, a complimentary second treatment is included within 12 months if further treatment is required, where clinically appropriate. Confirm current terms at booking.
Can a pinguecula come back?
It can, particularly with continued ultraviolet exposure.² Sunglasses and lubrication help reduce recurrence and irritation.
Is private pinguecula removal available on the NHS?
Pingueculae are usually monitored on the NHS and removal is rarely funded for cosmetic reasons, so prompt private pinguecula removal is generally self-funded.
