What Is Lens Replacement Surgery?

Lens replacement surgery removes your eye’s natural lens and replaces it with a carefully selected intraocular lens (IOL). This corrects your vision and means a cataract cannot develop in the treated eye.

Mr Hove On Living With A Trifocal IOL

What to Expect

Before Surgery

Every patient receives a comprehensive diagnostic assessment using Pentacam corneal mapping, OCT retinal imaging and dual biometry (measurements taken twice for precision). This ensures accurate lens selection and identifies any factors that could affect your outcome.

During Surgery

The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes under local anaesthetic drops – no injections around the eye. Through a micro-incision of around 2.2mm, your natural lens is gently removed using ultrasound and replaced with your chosen ZEISS lens. Most patients report feeling only slight pressure, with no pain.

Both Eyes in One Session (ISBCS)

ISBCS follows the same rigorous protocols as standard surgery, with each eye treated as a separate procedure using fresh instruments, drapes and solutions. This approach is suitable for selected patients and is discussed during your consultation.

Post-Surgery Enhancement Options

In approximately 5% of lens replacement surgeries, the final prescription may not achieve the intended near-zero target. If a residual refractive error of 1 dioptre or more remains, Blue Fin Vision® offers enhancement options to fine-tune your vision.
