Supporting Anxious Patients Before Lens Replacement Surgery at Blue Fin Vision®

What the procedure involves, what patients experience, and how anxiety is managed

Anxiety before elective eye surgery is normal and should be acknowledged as part of the clinical pathway – not minimised or dismissed. For lens replacement patients in particular, the knowledge that surgery is being performed on a clear, functioning eye often amplifies pre-operative anxiety compared with cataract patients whose vision is already impaired.

Understanding exactly what the procedure involves is one of the most effective ways to manage surgical anxiety. Lens replacement surgery is performed under topical anaesthetic drops. There are no injections around the eye in the standard pathway. Patients remain awake throughout but experience no pain during surgery.

What patients typically experience during the procedure:

  • Bright operating microscope light – patients are aware of a very bright light source throughout
  • Pressure sensation – some patients feel mild pressure as instruments enter the eye; this should not be painful
  • Fluid sensation – irrigation fluid during phacoemulsification may produce a sensation of warmth or movement
  • The IOL implantation – patients are aware of something happening but the implantation itself is not uncomfortable
  • Duration – the procedure typically takes 10 to 15 minutes per eye under experienced hands; Mr Hove’s 4-Minute Phaco™ technique demonstrates what is achievable with high-volume expertise

For patients with significant pre-operative anxiety, oral sedation is available at Blue Fin Vision®. This is discussed at the pre-operative assessment and can be arranged in advance. Sedation does not replace topical anaesthesia but reduces the anxious experience of the procedure.¹

Patients should be encouraged to ask specific questions about what they will experience – including what to do if they feel the urge to blink or move during surgery, and what the surgical team will say to them throughout the procedure. Informed patients have a measurably better surgical experience.²
