Anxiety before eye surgery is common and entirely understandable. The idea of a surgical procedure performed on the eye while awake is unfamiliar to most patients and can provoke significant apprehension, even in individuals who have previously undergone surgery in other contexts.
At Blue Fin Vision®, managing preoperative anxiety is treated as a clinical priority rather than a peripheral concern. Research consistently demonstrates that anxiety before surgery is associated with higher intraoperative pain perception, elevated patient movement during the procedure, and lower overall satisfaction with the surgical experience. Effective anxiety management therefore contributes directly to surgical safety and outcome quality. ¹
Blue Fin Vision®’s approach to anxious patients begins at the consultation stage. Patients are given a detailed and realistic explanation of what the surgical experience involves, including what they will see, hear, and feel during the procedure. This demystification of the operative environment is one of the most effective interventions for reducing procedural anxiety.
Cataract surgery under topical anaesthetic typically involves an experience of coloured lights and blurring rather than the frightening imagery that patients sometimes anticipate. The procedure is completed within 10–15 minutes and is not painful under appropriate topical anaesthesia. The surgical team maintains calm, clear verbal communication throughout. ²
For patients with significant or persistent anxiety despite preoperative preparation, oral or intravenous sedation options are available. These are discussed individually and arranged through the anaesthetic team at the relevant hospital site.
At Blue Fin Vision®, preoperative anxiety is acknowledged, addressed, and managed, not minimised or dismissed.
