YAG Capsulotomy and Long-Term Costs After Lens Replacement

1 min read

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is a common long-term event after lens replacement. It is treated with a YAG laser capsulotomy, a quick outpatient procedure.

Why PCO occurs

PCO results from residual lens epithelial cells migrating across the posterior capsule. Even with modern IOL designs, it remains a common occurrence. ¹

Why YAG matters financially

Some clinics include YAG in their RLE package; others charge separately. Typical standalone YAG fees range from £300-£600 per eye.

Why inclusion is valuable

A comprehensive RLE package should clarify:

  • Whether YAG is included
  • Time window
  • Eligibility criteria
  • Follow-up structure

Clinical reassurance

YAG is safe and effective, but it is a predictable long-term cost consideration.
