What Determines the Xanthelasma Removal Cost

Cost reflects the number and size of the plaques, whether one or both eyelids are treated, the complexity of the excision⁴ ⁵, and where the treatment is carried out. Larger or deeper plaques take more planning than small, superficial ones, and some cases need more than one session. The setting matters too: treatment in a main operating theatre costs more than the same procedure in our clinic.

One Session or Staged Treatment

Many plaques are treated in a single session. Larger, deeper or multiple lesions are sometimes staged to protect the eyelid and the cosmetic result, and your consultant explains the likely number of sessions at assessment.

Where Your Treatment Takes Place

Most xanthelasma removal is carried out at The Harley Street Eye Centre, our main and most cost-effective setting for this procedure, usually as a minor procedure under local anaesthetic. Treatment can also be arranged at Weymouth Street Hospital, Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford, One Hatfield Hospital or Chase Lodge Hospital, where it is performed in a main operating theatre. A main-theatre setting adds a minimum of £1,500 per treatment, so the location you choose affects the total. Your consultant will help you choose the most appropriate and cost-effective setting for your lesions.

Why the Cheapest Price May Not Be the Best Value

The cheapest advertised price is not always the true cost. A very low single-lesion price may exclude consultation, aftercare, follow-up, treatment of both lids or repeat sessions. Xanthelasma sits on the eyelid, not on ordinary facial skin, so value depends on safe, well-planned removal that protects the lid margin and a natural contour, not on the headline figure.

Insurance and Funding

Private xanthelasma removal is usually regarded as cosmetic and is typically self-funded. Some insurers cover the consultation or assessment, so it is worth checking your policy. It is rarely funded by the NHS.

A Note on Your Health

Xanthelasma does not mean you definitely have heart disease, and many people who have it have normal cholesterol. Because it can be associated with lipid abnormalities and cardiovascular risk¹ ² ³, however, a lipid check with your GP is sensible. Not every yellow or raised eyelid lesion is xanthelasma either, so an accurate diagnosis matters before any removal.
