TL;DR: The Daily Mail has featured Mr Mfazo Hove, consultant ophthalmic surgeon and founder of Blue Fin Vision®, in coverage of ocular melanoma, a rare form of eye cancer. His message is clear: keep up with routine eye examinations and have new vision changes checked rather than assuming they are minor.
A Subtle Change in Vision
The article, written by health reporter Marti Stelling, tells the story of Tessa Parry-Wingfield, who noticed that her eyes seemed not to be working together while jogging. As a contact lens wearer, she initially thought her prescription needed changing.
An examination revealed an unusual mark at the back of her left eye. Further investigations confirmed ocular melanoma, and Tessa subsequently underwent surgery to remove the eye. She shared her experience to encourage others to attend eye tests and seek advice about changes in their sight.
Mr Hove On Eye Examinations
Contributing expert commentary to the coverage, Mr Hove explained why symptoms alone cannot reliably alert people to a problem:
‘Many ocular melanomas cause no symptoms in the early stages, especially when they sit at the back or the edge of the eye.’
He highlighted the importance of examining the back of the eye thoroughly, using dilating drops when clinically appropriate. These drops widen the pupil to help the clinician see inside the eye.
Mr Hove also advised most adults to have an eye test at least every two years, or as often as their optometrist recommends. Anyone told they have a naevus, a mole-like mark inside the eye, should keep their follow-up appointments. His advice on new symptoms was equally direct:
‘New symptoms should be assessed with a proper examination of the back of the eye, rather than assumed to be something minor.’

Read the Daily Mail article: I blamed a subtle change to my vision at 48 on needing stronger contact lenses. But it was a sign of cancer – and I lost my eye because of it. Too many people ignore ‘small’ symptoms until it’s too late.
