Chalazion Removal Recovery
Most people return to normal activities within a day or two after chalazion removal. Bruising usually fades within one to two weeks, while any remaining firmness softens over the following weeks. Blue Fin Vision® provides written aftercare instructions and advice if you have concerns during recovery.
First 24 Hours After Surgery
You return home the same day. If an eye pad has been applied, keep it on for the time your consultant advises, usually a few hours. Remove it as instructed and begin using your prescribed ointment.
During the first day:
- Some swelling, bruising and blood-tinged tears are normal.
- Take paracetamol for any ache once the anaesthetic wears off.
- Rest and avoid bending, heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.
- Do not drive while the eye is padded or your vision is affected.
- Use a cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth for 10 minutes at a time to help reduce swelling.
- Sleep with your head slightly raised for the first night to help limit swelling.
Your Aftercare Ointment
Apply chloramphenicol eye ointment to the treated eye twice daily for five days.
Gently pull down the lower eyelid, place a small amount of ointment inside it, then blink. Your vision may blur for a few minutes after each application. This is normal.
Days 2 to 7: Early Healing Phase
Swelling is usually greatest during the first day or two, then begins to settle. Bruising may spread below the eye before it fades.
Key expectations during this phase:
- Swelling gradually reduces after the first two days.
- Bruising may remain visible as the eyelid heals.
- Clean the eyelashes gently with cooled boiled water if they become crusty.
- Continue your ointment twice daily until you have completed the five-day course.
- Most people return to work after one or two days.
Weeks 2 to 4: Steady Improvement
Bruising has usually faded by this stage, although the treated area may still feel firm or slightly raised. This is normal and generally softens with time.
Key milestones:
- Bruising has usually gone.
- Remaining firmness gradually softens.
- Restart warm compresses and lid hygiene once the eyelid is comfortable.
- Allow around four weeks before judging whether the original lump has fully cleared.
Warm compresses and ongoing lid care help keep the other eyelid glands healthy.
Beyond Four Weeks
By this stage, the eyelid usually looks and feels normal. If a small firm area remains, it may continue to soften over the following weeks.
If the lump has not cleared after four weeks, contact our team for advice. Up to one in ten chalazia need a second procedure because the first has not fully cleared the lump.
For self-funding patients, a second procedure is carried out at no additional charge at any of our locations under the Blue Fin Vision® Advantage. Insured patients claim through their insurer, subject to their policy.
Recovery Tips for Optimal Healing
Blue Fin Vision® provides detailed written aftercare instructions tailored to your treatment. Follow these practical steps for the best cosmetic outcome:
- Use your ointment as directed: Apply chloramphenicol eye ointment twice daily for five days.
- Avoid rubbing or pressing the eye: This can restart bleeding and swelling.
- Keep the area clean: Wash your hands before touching the eye or applying ointment.
- Raise your head slightly at night: This helps reduce swelling during the first night.
- Look after your eyelid margins: Restart warm compresses and lid hygiene once the eyelid is comfortable and continue regular care after healing to help prevent new chalazia.
When Can You Return to Normal Activities?
Activity | Timeline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Showering and hair washing | Next day | Avoid rubbing the eye |
Driving | Once the eye pad is off and vision is comfortable | Usually the next day |
Screens and reading | Same day | Take breaks if the eye feels tired |
Work | After one to two days | Earlier for desk work if comfortable |
Light exercise | After one to two days | Avoid heavy lifting for two to three days |
Eye make-up | After about one week | Use new products and avoid the treated eyelid until healed |
Contact lenses | After completing the five-day ointment course | Only once the eye is comfortable and no longer red |
Swimming and saunas | After about one week | Waiting helps reduce infection risk |
Timings vary. Your consultant will confirm the guidance that applies to you.
Managing Common Recovery Concerns
Swelling and Bruising
Your eyelid may look more swollen than it did before treatment during the first two days. This is temporary and does not necessarily mean the chalazion has become worse.
Bruising usually fades over one to two weeks. A cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth can help with swelling.
A Remaining Lump
The treated area can feel firm for two to four weeks while the tissue heals. Allow around four weeks before judging the result.
If the lump has not cleared after this time, contact our team for advice.
Blurred Vision
Ointment can blur your vision for a short time after each application. Blur that persists after the ointment has cleared should be reported.
A Red Bump Inside the Eyelid
A small red bump can be granulation tissue, a harmless healing response. Contact our team if it persists or bothers you.
A New Lump Elsewhere
A lump in a different place is a new chalazion, rather than a failure of the original treatment. Start warm compresses and let us know if it does not settle.
Post-Operative Follow-Up Schedule
No routine follow-up appointment is needed or included. Most chalazia heal without further review.
If you have concerns during recovery, or the lump has not cleared after four weeks, contact our team. We will advise you and arrange a review if clinically needed.
Supporting Long-Term Results
Removing a chalazion treats the existing lump, but new chalazia can develop in other eyelid glands.
Once the eyelid is comfortable, restart warm compresses and lid hygiene. Continuing regular care after healing helps keep the glands healthy and reduces the risk of new chalazia.
When to Contact Us Urgently
Call our team the same day, or attend your nearest emergency eye department out of hours, if you experience:
- Any reduction in vision
- Increasing pain after the first day
- Spreading redness or swelling
- A fever
- Bleeding that does not stop after 10 minutes of firm pressure
Do not wait for a routine appointment if you develop these symptoms.
