Sara’s Story: Seeing Her Son Clearly for the First Time in 21 Years, Featured in the Daily Mirror

TL;DR: A Blue Fin Vision® patient, Sara Rogers, has shared her experience of regaining clear sight after more than two decades with severe myopia and astigmatism. Her story, featured in the Daily Mirror and Wales Online, describes seeing her son Nathan’s face in detail for the first time following trifocal lens replacement with Mr Mfazo Hove.

A Mother's View, Restored

For 21 years, Sara Rogers, 53, from Powys in Wales, lived with severe short-sightedness (myopia) and astigmatism, an irregular curvature of the cornea that distorts vision. She could see no more than ten centimetres in front of her face and recognised her son Nathan only by the sound of his voice and the closeness of his touch.

The Moment Everything Changed

The emotional turning point came during Nathan’s 21st birthday celebrations in Turkey. Standing in the sunshine, Sara saw, for the first time, her son’s freckles, his eyelashes, and the grin lines around his eyes.

In her own words, shared with the Daily Mirror: “After the surgery, it felt like someone had turned my life up to HD. I could see hair grips in women’s hair, cracks between paving stones, laces on strangers’ shoes and tiny buttons on pedestrian crossings. It was all in 3D technicolour.”

The Surgery Behind the Story

When glasses no longer worked for her, Sara was offered trifocal lens replacement using advanced ZEISS lenses by Mr Mfazo Hove, consultant ophthalmic surgeon and founder of Blue Fin Vision®. Trifocal lens replacement involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with a precision intraocular lens designed to provide clear sight at near, intermediate, and distance ranges, reducing reliance on glasses.

"I've Stepped Back Into My Life"

Sara describes the change as “a huge weight being lifted”, adding that she feels safer, more confident and happier. “You don’t realise how fortunate you are when you can’t see more than ten centimetres in front of your nose, the world can feel like a very frightening place. For me, it isn’t anymore.”
