Previous Corneal Surgery: Why Prior Procedures Change Suitability

1 min read

Eyes that have already undergone corneal surgery require additional caution.

Previous LASIK, PRK, radial keratotomy (RK), corneal cross-linking, or corneal scarring alter biomechanical properties.

Radial keratotomy in particular weakens corneal structural integrity permanently. ¹

Enhancement procedures after LASIK are common and often safe, but each additional treatment increases percent tissue altered and reduces residual stromal reserve. ²

Ectasia has been reported after retreatment where structural margins were insufficient. ³

Evaluation after prior corneal surgery includes:

  • Residual stromal bed thickness
  • Flap thickness measurement (if prior LASIK)
  • Tomography and posterior elevation
  • Epithelial mapping when indicated

At Blue Fin Vision®, previous corneal surgery does not automatically exclude further treatment.

But it resets the safety threshold.

The cornea remembers every intervention.

Each decision must respect cumulative structural impact.
