Is My Prescription Still Changing? Why Stability Matters Before Laser Eye Surgery

1 min read

Laser surgery permanently reshapes the cornea to match your current refractive error.

If that error continues to change, results may regress.

Progressive myopia can continue into early adulthood, particularly in individuals with strong genetic predisposition or significant near-work demand. ¹

Guidelines require documented refractive stability before proceeding. ²

Enhancements are possible but consume additional corneal tissue. Structural reserve should be preserved whenever possible.

Indicators of instability include:

  • Change greater than 0.50 dioptres in 12 months
  • Progressive axial elongation
  • Increasing astigmatism
  • Young age with recent spectacle updates

At Blue Fin Vision®, we assess historical prescriptions and pattern progression.

Elective corneal surgery should not be performed on a moving target.

Waiting until stability is achieved improves predictability, reduces retreatment need and protects corneal tissue.

Laser surgery is about precision.

Precision requires stability.
