Is ICL surgery suitable if laser eye surgery is not an option?

< 1 min read

ICL surgery is often an excellent alternative when laser eye surgery is not suitable or not preferred.

Common reasons to choose ICL instead

Internal lenses avoid reshaping the cornea.

  • Thin or irregular corneas that make LASIK or SMILE unsafe
  • Very high prescriptions beyond typical laser ranges
  • Dry eye or surface disease that could worsen after corneal procedures
  • Desire for a reversible option that preserves corneal structure
  • Occupations where preserving corneal integrity is advantageous

Checks still required

Suitability is not automatic.

  • Adequate anterior chamber depth and healthy angle
  • Good endothelial cell counts
  • Healthy lens, retina, and optic nerve
  • Stable prescription over time
  • Realistic expectations and commitment to follow‑up
