Protecting Your Eyes in the Sun: Why Londoners Keep Overlooking This Everyday Health Habit

As featured in London Daily News, 17 April 2026

TL;DR: Londoners routinely reach for SPF at the first sign of sunshine, yet leave their eyes unprotected against the same UV rays. Mr Mfazo Hove, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and founder of Blue Fin Vision®, explains why daily eye protection matters all year round, and how simple habits can reduce the long-term risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

A Familiar London Scene

When the sun appears over London, the response is predictable. Out come the SPF bottles, the sun hats and the plans for longer afternoons in the park. One area, however, is consistently left exposed, despite being just as vulnerable to ultraviolet damage: the eyes.

With brighter days, stronger UV levels and more time spent outdoors, ophthalmic specialists are reminding the public that eye protection belongs in the same category as sunscreen, not as a seasonal accessory.

A Consultant's Perspective

London Daily News recently spoke with Mr Mfazo Hove, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and founder of Blue Fin Vision®, about why sun protection for the eyes should sit at the heart of everyday health habits.

“People are very aware of protecting their skin, but far less aware of protecting their eyes,” he explains. “Yet the eyes are just as susceptible to UV damage, if not more so in some cases.”

Why UV Protection for the Eyes Matters

Sunglasses are often treated as a fashion statement. Medically, they are a form of protection. UV rays can damage delicate structures inside the eye over time, and that damage is cumulative, building quietly for decades before symptoms appear.

“UV exposure is cumulative,” says Mr Hove. “Repeated exposure without proper protection increases the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration in the long term.”

Every unshielded walk to the station, lunchtime stroll or outdoor coffee quietly adds to that total.

Not Just a Summer Issue

One of the most common misconceptions is that eye protection is only needed on a hot beach holiday. In the UK, UV rays are present all year round and can penetrate cloud cover.

That includes:

  • Spring sunshine after a grey morning
  • Bright, low winter sun on the commute
  • Overcast days where light reflects off water, glass and pavements

Some of the most damaging exposure happens in routine London settings rather than on holiday.

The Indoor Strain Modern Life Adds

While UV is the outdoor risk, screens add an indoor one. Extended hours on laptops, phones and tablets reduce blink rate and can leave the eyes dry, irritated and fatigued.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Stinging or burning
  • Intermittent blurred vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • A heavy, tired feeling by evening

“It is a combination of outdoor UV exposure and indoor digital strain that really impacts eye comfort,” Mr Hove explains.

How to Protect Your Eyes Properly

The habits are simple once they become routine.

  • Choose proper UV protection: look for sunglasses labelled 100% UV protection or UV400. Style is optional; protection is not.
  • Wear them year-round, including in winter brightness and on cloudy days.
  • Think about coverage: wraparound styles reduce light entering from the sides.
  • Add a wide-brimmed hat to cut UV exposure to the eyes and surrounding skin.
  • Protect children early, as younger eyes are more sensitive to UV damage.

When to Have Your Eyes Checked

Regular eye examinations are a core part of protecting long-term vision. They can detect early signs of cataracts, glaucoma, and systemic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, often before other symptoms appear.

Mr Hove is clear that prevention is always preferable to treatment. “By the time symptoms appear, some damage may already be done,” he says. “Regular eye checks are essential.”

At Blue Fin Vision®, consultant-led assessments draw on advanced diagnostics including OCT imaging and Zeiss platforms, supporting early detection and individualised care across clinics on Harley Street, Weymouth Street, Chelmsford, Hatfield and Chase Lodge Hospital in North West London.

A Quiet Habit With Long-Term Impact

Sun protection is usually something visible: the SPF, the hat, the summer glow. Eye protection is quieter, and arguably just as important. Clear vision shapes driving, working, reading and every everyday moment in between.

As Mr Hove puts it: “Looking after your eyes now is an investment in your future sight.”

So, the next time the sun breaks over the city, think beyond SPF. Put your sunglasses on, protect your eyes, and make it a habit rather than an afterthought.
