Causes: How Do These Infections Develop?
Preseptal Cellulitis Causes:
- Typically arises from local trauma (such as cuts or insect bites), spread from nearby infections (like sinusitis or conjunctivitis), or skin conditions.
- Common in children, often following minor injuries or upper respiratory infections.
- Bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species are frequent culprits.
Orbital Cellulitis Causes:
- Most often results from the spread of infection from the adjacent sinuses, especially the ethmoid sinus.
- Can also occur following trauma that penetrates the orbit, dental infections, or as a complication of systemic illness in immunocompromised individuals.
- The same bacteria as in preseptal cellulitis are involved, but the infection penetrates deeper into the orbital tissues.
Symptoms: Recognising the Warning Signs
Preseptal Cellulitis Symptoms:
- Redness, swelling, and tenderness of the eyelid and surrounding skin.
- Mild pain or discomfort, sometimes accompanied by a low-grade fever.
- Crucially, eye movement remains normal, and vision is not affected.
- No bulging of the eye (proptosis) or double vision.
Orbital Cellulitis Symptoms:
- More severe swelling and redness, often involving the entire eyelid and surrounding tissues.
- Significant pain, especially when moving the eye.
- Bulging of the eye (proptosis), restricted or painful eye movements.
- Reduced or blurred vision, double vision, and sometimes systemic symptoms such as high fever and malaise.
- These symptoms indicate deeper involvement and require urgent medical attention.
