Looking for the Best YAG Laser Capsulotomy in North West London?

TL;DR: Patients from North West London access Blue Fin Vision®’s consultant-led YAG capsulotomy service at the Harley Street Eye Centre. The laser itself usually takes only a few minutes, but you should allow approximately 30–60 minutes for assessment, dilation, treatment and any required pressure checks. Every patient receives a macular OCT scan first, at no additional charge.

If you are looking for YAG laser capsulotomy recommendations in North West London, start by finding out why your vision has changed. Clouding after cataract surgery is not always caused by the condition that YAG treatment addresses.

What Is Posterior Capsule Opacification?

During cataract or lens replacement surgery, the artificial lens is placed inside the eye’s natural capsule. Over time, residual lens epithelial cells can cloud that capsule. This is called posterior capsule opacification (PCO).

It is not the cataract returning: a cataract cannot recur once the natural lens has been removed. With sufficiently long follow-up, some degree of posterior capsule opacification develops in almost every eye following cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. However, it does not always become visually significant or require treatment.¹

YAG laser capsulotomy is considered only when the clouding meaningfully affects vision or visual quality and the clinical findings correspond with your symptoms.²

Typical Symptoms

  • Gradual return of cloudy or blurred vision after a period of good clarity.
  • Increased glare or halos around lights, particularly at night.
  • Reduced contrast and renewed difficulty with reading or fine detail.

These symptoms warrant assessment rather than assumption. Dry eye, a change in your glasses prescription, macular disease, glaucoma and corneal problems can all mimic PCO.

The Macular OCT Scan and Its Limits

Before any YAG treatment at Blue Fin Vision®, every patient receives a macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan at no additional charge. It produces a detailed image of the central retina, the part of the eye responsible for sharp vision.

Your consultant interprets the scan alongside vision tests and a slit-lamp examination, which uses a microscope to examine the capsule. The scan can identify macular disease that may explain your symptoms or limit the benefit of laser treatment.

A macular OCT scan does not screen for problems at the edge of the retina. A dilated examination of the peripheral retina is performed where indicated.

What the Visit Involves

YAG capsulotomy is an outpatient laser treatment that requires no incision. It is performed through a contact lens after dilating and anaesthetic drops.

Pressure inside the eye, called intraocular pressure, is checked routinely before the procedure and after treatment if indicated.³

You may notice new floaters as capsule debris disperses. Some patients also become more aware of pre-existing floaters in the clear gel inside the eye, called the vitreous, once their vision is clearer.³

Retinal complications are rare but recognised. This is one reason treatment is reserved for visually significant PCO.³ Do not drive until the dilating drops have worn off and you meet the legal driving standard.³

When to Seek Urgent Assessment

The following symptoms are not typical of PCO. Seek urgent eye assessment rather than waiting for a routine YAG appointment if you develop:

  • A sudden shower of floaters.
  • New flashes of light.
  • A curtain or shadow in your vision.
  • Significant pain.
  • Rapidly worsening vision.³

Continuity for Chase Lodge Patients

If you had cataract or lens replacement surgery with Blue Fin Vision® at Chase Lodge Hospital, you can return to the same team for YAG assessment and treatment without fragmenting your care: the surgeon interpreting your capsule, symptoms and OCT is the practice that knows your eyes. See YAG capsulotomy costs and the patient checklist before booking.
