TL;DR: How long does YAG laser capsulotomy take? The laser treatment itself usually takes only a few minutes. Patients should generally allow approximately 30–60 minutes for the complete appointment, although this varies according to dilation time, assessment and whether a post-procedure pressure check is required.
YAG Laser Capsulotomy Timing Breakdown
- Assessment and macular optical coherence tomography (OCT): A detailed scan of the central retina, included within the visit
- Pupil dilation and preparation: 15–30 minutes
- Laser application: Typically a few minutes, occasionally longer for dense fibrosis, meaning thicker scar-like tissue
- Post-procedure observation and pressure check if indicated: Variable
Intraocular pressure, meaning the pressure inside the eye, is checked routinely before the procedure and after treatment if indicated.¹
What Happens During the Appointment
- Clinical assessment and macular OCT to help identify whether the macula, the central part of the retina, is contributing to the symptoms
- Dilation and topical anaesthetic drops, which numb the surface of the eye
- Positioning at the laser with a contact lens for precise focusing²
- Delivery of focused laser pulses to create a clear central opening
- Brief observation and discharge with aftercare advice
After the Procedure
Vision is often improved once the dilating drops wear off.¹
Do not drive yourself home after dilation. Arrange suitable alternative transport because the drops can temporarily blur your vision.³ Resume driving only when your vision has stabilised and you meet the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) legal eyesight requirements.⁴
Most patients resume ordinary activities the same day or the next day.¹ Full settling depends on individual factors and any other existing eye conditions.
No fasting is required unless there is an entirely separate clinical reason.³
YAG Laser Capsulotomy Timing and Results
YAG laser capsulotomy is a brief, non-incisional procedure. Where posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is responsible for the symptoms, it may restore clearer vision.
A consultant-led assessment determines suitability and sets realistic expectations.
