Find the Best Private Cataract Surgery in North West London

TL;DR: The right time for cataract surgery is when a cataract genuinely affects your vision or quality of life and the expected benefit outweighs your individual risks. There is no need to wait until a cataract is “ripe”, but its presence alone is not an indication to operate. UK guidance says access should not be restricted by visual acuity, how sharply you see on an eye chart, alone.¹

Signs a Cataract Has Become Functionally Significant

  • Night driving that feels unsafe: glare, halos and slow recovery from headlights
  • Reading difficulty that stronger glasses and brighter lamps no longer fix
  • Frequent prescription changes that never quite restore clarity
  • Colours dulling, and growing loss of confidence in familiar tasks

Acuity alone does not determine timing: a patient who measures well on the chart but has stopped driving at night has a functionally significant cataract.¹ ²

What the Assessment Establishes

A Blue Fin Vision® assessment examines the cornea, retina and optic nerve as well as the lens, because glare and blur have other causes and because co-existing disease changes both the plan and the realistic outcome.

Lens choice is also part of planning this lens-based vision correction surgery: monofocal, toric, EDOF (extended depth of focus) or trifocal. The trade-offs of each are set out in our IOL lens guide.²

Surgery Day: Minutes in Theatre, Around Two Hours on Site

Routine surgery uses micro-incisional phacoemulsification, which removes the cloudy lens through a small incision using ultrasound, under topical anaesthesia (numbing drops). In Mr Hove’s routine practice the surgical component commonly takes approximately four to six minutes per uncomplicated eye, the timing described by his 4-Minute Phaco™ technique; complex cases appropriately take longer, and the description is of technique, not a guarantee.

Most patients report no pain or only mild sensation, aware of light, water and gentle pressure rather than discomfort.³

Where both eyes are suitable, same-day bilateral surgery is performed as two completely separate sterile procedures, with the Cochrane evidence showing no clinically important differences in outcomes compared with operating on separate days.⁴ Allow approximately two hours for the complete visit, covering admission, dilation, checks, surgery and discharge.

Recovery and Driving

Many patients notice improvement within 24 to 48 hours, though this is not universal, and the eye continues settling over several weeks.

Do not drive yourself home after surgery. Resume driving only when your vision has recovered sufficiently, you meet the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) number-plate, visual-acuity and visual-field standards, and your consultant advises that it is safe to do so. Your postoperative instructions will explain how and when this should be assessed.

Outcomes to Check When Choosing the Best Private Cataract Surgery

Blue Fin Vision® has recorded no case of endophthalmitis, a serious infection inside the eye, across approximately 36,000 consecutive cataract and refractive lens exchange procedures over around six years. In Mr Hove’s latest audit of approximately 5,600 cataract operations, the posterior capsule, the membrane that supports the lens implant, was preserved in approximately 99.8% of eyes.

These results form part of six consecutive years of outcomes published using National Ophthalmology Database methodology, set out alongside the Blue Fin Vision® Advantage. Published figures of this kind are more meaningful than “best surgeon” language: they can be checked, compared and questioned. National audit publications define the benchmarks against which results of this kind are compared.⁵

Blue Fin Vision® is Spear’s 500 Top Recommended, listed in the Tatler Address Book 2026, and holds three Doctify Outstanding Patient Experience Awards (2024, 2025 and 2026).
