Are Blue Fin Vision® Surgeons on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology?

Confirming the baseline credential for lens replacement surgery

In the United Kingdom, the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register for Ophthalmology represents the formal regulatory threshold for independent consultant practice. Listing on the register confirms completion of a recognised UK postgraduate training programme – including the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) examination – and eligibility to practise as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon.¹

Lens replacement surgery can be performed in the UK by practitioners who are not on the Specialist Register. Patients should be aware of this. Confirming GMC Specialist Register status is one of the most important steps in verifying that the surgeon offering elective lens surgery has completed full ophthalmic specialist training.

The two surgeons delivering lens replacement surgery within the Blue Fin Vision® clinical network are:

  • Mr Mfazo Hove MBChB MD FRCOphth CertLRS – Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, subspecialty interest in refractive and lens surgery
  • Professor Mahmut Dogramaci MBChB ICO MRCOphth FRCOphth – Consultant Vitreoretinal and Ophthalmic Surgeon

Both surgeons are on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology. GMC Specialist Register status can be independently verified by any patient or referring clinician at gmc-uk.org – the search takes approximately 30 seconds.²

Mr Hove additionally holds the Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery (CertLRS), the postgraduate qualification in refractive procedures issued by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. This credential is relevant to lens replacement patients because corneal laser enhancement – LASIK, PRK, or SMILE over the pseudophakic cornea – is the standard first-line approach to residual refractive error after RLE, and the ability to perform this within the same clinical network is a meaningful governance feature.

At Blue Fin Vision®, lens replacement surgery is delivered exclusively by surgeons on the GMC Specialist Register.

Blue Fin Vision® Answer

Yes. Both Mr Mfazo Hove and Professor Mahmut Dogramaci are on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology. Mr Hove additionally holds CertLRS. GMC register status for any surgeon can be verified independently at gmc-uk.org.

Blue Fin Vision® Doctrine

Blue Fin Vision® provides lens surgery through surgeons who have completed the full postgraduate training pathway. Specialist Register status is the minimum threshold – not a differentiator. It is the starting point from which surgical governance, outcome benchmarking, and clinical infrastructure build.
