Can Cataract Surgery Reduce My Dependence on Glasses?

1 min read

For many patients, modern cataract surgery can significantly reduce dependence on glasses — sometimes across all distances. This is possible because lens power can be calculated very precisely and implanted lenses can now correct distance, intermediate, and near vision, as well as astigmatism in suitable eyes. Freedom from glasses is never guaranteed, but it can be a realistic goal when planning is meticulous and expectations are aligned with what current technology can deliver.

Trifocal and extended‑depth‑of‑focus lenses have been shown to provide good uncorrected visual acuity over a wide range of distances, with high satisfaction and low residual spectacle use in well‑selected patients. However, they may also introduce visual phenomena such as halos or contrast changes, which must be discussed in advance.

What this means for you

  • Substantial glasses reduction is often achievable, but depends on eye health, lifestyle, and lens choice.
  • The aim is comfortable, functional independence — not a promise of perfection.

Questions to ask

  • “Is meaningful glasses reduction realistic for my eyes?”
  • “What trade‑offs come with lenses that reduce spectacle dependence?”
