What causes gritty eyes?

< 1 min read

Gritty eyes feel dry, sandy, or as though something is stuck on the surface. This symptom is very common and usually relates to the tear film or eyelids.

Typical causes of gritty sensation

Often the tears are not spreading properly, leaving dry patches. Eyelid problems can also roughen the surface or affect tear quality.

  • Dry eye from screen use, air conditioning, or certain medicines
  • Blepharitis causing crusting and irritation along the lash line
  • Allergies or environmental irritants such as dust and smoke
  • Occasional small foreign bodies like eyelashes or grit

Relieving gritty eyes

Treatment depends on the underlying cause but usually focuses on improving the tear film and eyelid health. Simple steps often make a noticeable difference.

  • Use preservative-free lubricating drops regularly
  • Practice warm compresses and lid cleaning if blepharitis is present
  • Seek assessment if pain, light sensitivity, or reduced vision occur
  • Protect eyes from drafts and take regular screen breaks
