PresbyMAX can be considered in well‑controlled diabetics without significant retinopathy, but many patients will be advised to prioritise medical and retinal stability first.
Factors influencing suitability
Systemic and ocular control are key.
- Good glycaemic control and stable general health
- Little or no diabetic retinopathy and no macular oedema
- Healthy corneal surface and tear film
- Stable prescription within laser ranges
- Understanding that diabetes may still affect vision over time
When it is often unsuitable
Advanced disease increases risk and reduces benefit.
- Proliferative retinopathy or diabetic macular oedema
- Poor systemic control with higher infection and healing risk
- Existing or developing cataracts linked to diabetes
- Need for frequent intraocular treatments that take priority
- Decision that improving metabolic and retinal status is more urgent than refractive surgery
