Can I shower after selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT)?

< 1 min read

You can usually shower the same or next day after SLT. Taking a few precautions in the first days helps keep the eye comfortable and reduces irritation.

Showering safely early on

The eye may feel slightly tender after the laser. Gentle care prevents soap and shampoo from aggravating the surface.

  • Keep your face away from the direct shower stream.
  • Close your eyes when washing hair and rinsing.
  • If soap enters the eye, let clean water rinse it out without rubbing.
  • Use lubricating drops afterwards if the eye feels dry or gritty.
  • Pat around the eye gently with a soft, clean towel.

Returning to normal routines

Restrictions can usually relax after a few days as comfort improves. Always follow specific advice from your eye clinic.

  • Normal shower routines are fine once soreness and light sensitivity settle.
  • Avoid very hot, steamy bathrooms if they make eyes uncomfortable.
  • Continue prescribed drops for the full course.
  • Seek review if redness, discharge, or significant pain develops.
  • Maintain good hygiene to support overall eye health.
