Dermatochalasis surgery to remove excess eyelid skin is usually not painful during the procedure because local anaesthetic is used. Recovery discomfort is generally mild and short-lived.
During the operation
Numbing injections briefly sting, then the eyelids become numb. You may sense movement and pressure but not cutting.
- Sedation can make you more relaxed if you feel anxious
- Pain scores are monitored and extra anaesthetic given as needed
- The procedure is relatively quick and performed as a day case
- Most patients remain comfortable throughout
After surgery
Bruising, tightness, and a dull ache are common for a few days. These symptoms usually respond well to simple measures.
- Cold packs and head elevation reduce swelling and discomfort
- Over-the-counter painkillers often suffice
- Severe or increasing pain, especially with visual symptoms, should be checked
- Most people are surprised that pain is less than expected
