Does YAG laser capsulotomy hurt?

< 1 min read

YAG laser capsulotomy usually does not hurt. Numbing drops are used, and most people feel only brief taps or pops of light.

How it feels

You sit at a machine similar to a normal eye exam. A contact lens may be placed on the eye.

  • Small clicks and flashes of light are noticed during treatment
  • Some patients feel a tiny tap or shock-like sensation
  • The procedure is quick, often less than five minutes
  • Significant pain during the laser is very uncommon

After the procedure

Mild ache or headache can occur for a few hours. These symptoms usually settle with rest and simple pain relief.

  • Vision may be temporarily blurry from drops and floaters
  • Anti-inflammatory drops may be prescribed
  • Severe pain, redness, or sudden vision loss should be reported urgently
  • Most people resume normal activities the same day
