Is chalazion removal surgery painful?

< 1 min read

Chalazion removal surgery is usually not painful during the procedure because strong local anaesthetic is used. Afterwards, most people experience mild aching and tenderness rather than severe pain.

During the procedure

Numbing injections are given into the eyelid, which sting briefly. Once they work, you should feel only pressure and movement.

  • The lump is usually opened from the inner lid surface
  • You may sense gentle pushing but no sharp cutting
  • The procedure is quick, often less than 20 minutes
  • Any discomfort can be reported so extra anaesthetic is added

Recovery discomfort

After surgery, the eyelid may feel sore, bruised, and slightly gritty. These symptoms settle over a few days.

  • Simple painkillers like paracetamol usually control pain well
  • Warm compresses and ointment help comfort and healing
  • Significant pain, swelling, or discharge should be reviewed promptly
  • Most people return to normal activities within a short time
