What is LipiFlow treatment?

< 1 min read

LipiFlow is a device‑based treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction that combines controlled heat and gentle pulsating pressure to the inner eyelids. It aims to clear blocked glands and improve the oily component of the tear film.

How LipiFlow Works

Single‑use applicators are placed over and under the eyelids, warming the gland area from the inside while protecting the eye surface. The device then applies cyclical pressure to express stagnant oil from the glands.

  • The procedure takes around 10-15 minutes per session
  • Most patients experience minimal discomfort
  • Improvements in symptoms and gland function may develop over weeks
  • Repeat treatments can be considered if benefits decline over time

Place in Dry Eye Therapy

LipiFlow is usually offered when conservative measures such as warm compresses and lid hygiene are insufficient. It is one of several thermal pulsation systems available.

  • Not all patients respond, particularly if glands are severely atrophic
  • Costs are often higher and may not be covered by insurance
  • Ongoing home care remains important after treatment
  • Assessment with meibography and gland evaluation helps select candidates
