How do I prevent dry eyes?

< 1 min read

Dry eye occurs when the tears do not lubricate the surface of the eye adequately, leading to discomfort and blurred vision. Prevention focuses on supporting a stable tear film and reducing factors that worsen evaporation.

Everyday measures

Simple steps such as taking regular breaks from screens, blinking fully and keeping rooms from becoming too dry can help. Using lubricating eye drops, managing blepharitis with lid hygiene and reviewing medications that aggravate dryness are also important.

  • Avoid direct airflow from fans, air conditioning and car vents towards the eyes
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule for screen use: every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for 20 seconds
  • Use preservative-free artificial tears if frequent dosing is needed
  • Seek assessment if soreness, redness or fluctuating vision persist
