Expert Treatment in London, Hertfordshire & Essex

From Only £700 per eye

What are Pterygium & Pinguecula?

Pterygium is a benign, wedge-shaped growth of tissue on the white of the eye that may extend onto the cornea. Often linked to UV exposure, it can cause redness, discomfort and, if left untreated, affect your vision.

Pinguecula are small, yellowish bumps on the conjunctiva near the cornea. While typically harmless, they can become inflamed or cosmetically concerning.

Both conditions are often monitored on the NHS if asymptomatic, but removal is typically private unless vision or discomfort is significantly affected. Blue Fin Vision® offers prompt access to surgical or laser options under consultant care, for both functional and cosmetic concerns.

Our lead consultant has performed over 55,000 eye procedures with complication rates three to five times below UK averages (independently audited through the National Ophthalmology Database).

Is Removal Right for You?

Pterygium or pinguecula removal may suit you if you have:

  • A growth that is enlarging or approaching the cornea
  • Persistent redness, irritation or discomfort
  • Cosmetic concerns affecting your confidence
  • Blurred or distorted vision (pterygium affecting the cornea)
  • Inflammation that does not respond to lubricating drops

You may need additional assessment if you have:

  • Active eye infection or inflammation
  • Dry eye disease requiring treatment first
  • Previous eye surgery affecting the conjunctiva
  • Conditions affecting healing

Your consultant will examine your eye and recommend the most appropriate technique based on the size, location and type of growth.

Pterygium Removal

Pterygium removal uses excision with conjunctival autograft – the gold-standard technique that significantly reduces recurrence risk. Your consultant removes the pterygium and grafts healthy tissue from another part of your eye to cover the area, promoting natural healing and preserving ocular surface health.

The procedure:

  • Performed under local anaesthetic as a day case
  • Takes approximately 30-45 minutes
  • Advanced microsurgical techniques ensure complete removal
  • You return home the same day

Available at: Weymouth Street (London), Chase Lodge Hospital (North London), Chelmsford and Hatfield.

Pinguecula Removal

Blue Fin Vision® offers two approaches for pinguecula removal:

Surgical Excision

Direct removal of the pinguecula under local anaesthetic. Suitable for larger or more prominent lesions where complete removal is preferred.

Argon Laser Photocoagulation

A minimally invasive option that reduces inflammation and improves appearance with minimal downtime. Argon laser patients receive a complimentary second treatment within 12 months if required.

Argon laser treatment is available exclusively at our Harley Street clinic.

Surgical excision available at: Harley Street, Chase Lodge Hospital (North London), Chelmsford and Hatfield.
