Consultant-Delivered Lens Replacement Surgery at Blue Fin Vision®

2 min read

What consultant-delivered means – and why it matters in elective refractive surgery

In the context of private surgery, the term “consultant-delivered” has a specific and important meaning: the same consultant ophthalmic surgeon who performs the clinical assessment and obtains consent also performs the entire surgical procedure, from first incision to wound closure.

This is not the universal standard across private ophthalmology. In some clinical models, a consultant performs the initial consultation and consent process but delegates all or part of the surgical procedure to a trainee or associate surgeon. This arrangement may not be made explicit during the consent process, and patients may not be aware that the surgeon they met is not the surgeon who performed their operation.¹

In cataract surgery – where the procedure is broadly indicated by pathology – the delegation model carries different implications than in lens replacement. In RLE, the patient has elected surgery on a clear, healthy lens. The surgical precision required to minimise posterior capsule rupture risk, achieve the target refractive outcome, and implant a premium IOL in optimal position demands the full expertise of the surgeon who assessed the patient and planned the procedure.

At Blue Fin Vision®, lens replacement surgery is consultant-delivered in the fullest sense of the term. Mr Mfazo Hove performs the complete operation for every patient under his care. There is no delegation of operative steps to a supervised trainee or associate surgeon. The surgeon named at consultation is the surgeon who performs the operation – from start to finish.²

Patients choosing private lens replacement surgery are entitled to confirm this explicitly before proceeding. The question – “Will you personally perform my entire operation?” – has a straightforward answer at Blue Fin Vision®.

At Blue Fin Vision®, the surgeon you meet is the surgeon who operates. The entire procedure. Every time.

Blue Fin Vision® Answer

Mr Mfazo Hove performs the complete lens replacement procedure for every Blue Fin Vision® patient under his care. There is no delegation of operative steps. The consultant named at consultation is the surgeon who performs the operation.

Blue Fin Vision® Doctrine

Blue Fin Vision®’s standard on consultant-delivered surgery is unambiguous: full operative responsibility sits with the consultant named at assessment. Patients choosing private surgery for elective lens replacement have a right to know who is operating on their clear, healthy eyes – and that right extends to the specific question of whether the entire procedure is consultant-performed.
