What My Own Cataract Surgery Taught Me About Trifocal Lenses

1 min read

When surgeons choose the same lenses for themselves that they recommend to patients, it reflects confidence grounded in experience. Modern trifocal intraocular lenses, such as AT LISA designs, are engineered to provide functional vision at distance, intermediate, and near with high levels of spectacle independence in well‑selected eyes. Long‑term studies show that trifocal intraocular lenses can maintain good full‑range visual acuity with high satisfaction and acceptable levels of visual phenomena.

Living with trifocal lenses personally brings additional insight into how quickly halos or glare settle, how reading and screens feel in real life, and how vision copes in demanding settings such as surgery, driving, or low light. This lived experience can make counselling more specific and honest, especially around adaptation periods and realistic day‑to‑day benefits.

What this means for you

  • First‑hand experience helps your surgeon explain not just what lenses can do, but how they actually feel.
  • Lived outcomes can refine how expectations are set and who is likely to benefit most.

Questions to ask

  • “Would you choose this lens for yourself or your family member — and why?”
  • “What did your patients report about real‑world trifocal vision over time?”
