ICL surgery is an elective intraocular procedure carried out on a healthy eye. ¹ ² ³ The standard of surgeon qualification is therefore not a peripheral concern – it is the foundation of the entire clinical pathway. The GMC Specialist Register confirms that a practitioner has completed a recognised ophthalmology training programme, passed the relevant assessments, and holds substantive consultant-level credentials.
Refractive surgery, including ICL implantation, can technically be offered by practitioners who have not completed full ophthalmology specialist training. This is one of the regulatory gaps in UK private practice that patients are rarely made aware of. Verifying Specialist Register status takes under two minutes on the GMC website and removes a category of risk that should not exist.
At Blue Fin Vision®, Mr Mfazo Hove holds full GMC Specialist Register status in ophthalmology and has maintained consultant standing since completing training at Moorfields Eye Hospital. All clinical decisions, from pre-operative suitability assessment to intraoperative management and long-term surveillance, are made and owned by a single named consultant. That accountability is not delegated.
Patients who are considering ICL surgery at any centre should verify Specialist Register status before attending a consultation. It is the baseline, not a differentiator.
