Laser enhancement after cataract surgery refers to corneal refractive surgery, typically LASIK, PRK, or SMILE, performed to correct residual refractive error following lens implantation. It is the most commonly employed method for managing refractive surprise after cataract surgery and is applicable to a broad range of patients including those with previous refractive surgery history. ¹
At Blue Fin Vision®, laser enhancement after cataract surgery is available within the same clinical network. Mr Mfazo Hove performs all major forms of corneal laser surgery including LASIK, PRK, LASEK, and SMILE, and has Certificate of Laser Refractive Surgery (CertLRS) qualification from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. This means that both the primary lens procedure and any subsequent laser enhancement can be managed by the same surgical team without external referral.
The eligibility criteria for laser enhancement after cataract surgery include: stability of the postoperative refraction for a minimum period (typically three months), adequate corneal thickness and topographic characteristics, and absence of contraindications to the specific laser modality being considered.
For patients who had previous laser eye surgery before their cataract procedure, a post-refractive cataract group, the biometric complexity of the primary surgery may result in a slightly higher probability of meaningful residual error. In this group, the availability of laser enhancement within the same clinical system is particularly relevant.
Under Blue Fin Vision®’s clearer and fairer enhancement policy, laser enhancement coverage depends on the surgical pathway. For self-pay cataract surgery, lens replacement surgery, and insured cataract surgery where a premium lens upgrade was chosen, laser enhancement is fully covered by Blue Fin Vision® within 24 months of the original procedure at no additional cost to the patient. For insured cataract surgery with a standard monofocal lens, laser enhancement is not included, as the clinical objective of that pathway is restoring functional vision rather than achieving spectacle independence. Enhancement coverage is confirmed before surgery begins, so patients know exactly where they stand behind the refractive outcome from the outset.
The availability of laser enhancement within the same clinical network, combined with transparent enhancement coverage, is an important but underappreciated feature of a comprehensive cataract surgery service.
