In the context of private cataract surgery, the term ‘consultant-delivered’ has a specific meaning: the same consultant ophthalmic surgeon who performs the clinical assessment is responsible for performing the entire surgical procedure.
This is not universal across private ophthalmology. In some clinical models, a consultant performs the initial consultation but delegates all or part of the surgery to a trainee or associate. The consent process may not always make this arrangement explicit.
At Blue Fin Vision®, cataract surgery is consultant-delivered in the fullest sense. Mr Mfazo Hove performs the complete surgical procedure for each patient under his care. There is no delegation of the operative steps to a supervised trainee or associate surgeon.
This approach is consistent with the standards outlined in the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ guidance on consultant practice and reflects the ethical framework described in the Blue Fin Vision® Consultant Standards page, which aligns with the Montgomery v Lanarkshire (2015) legal standard for informed consent. Patients should be informed of who will perform their surgery as part of the consent process. ¹
For patients choosing private care specifically to access consultant expertise, confirming the operative model before proceeding is an important step in ensuring that the care received reflects the standard expected.
At Blue Fin Vision®, the surgeon named at consultation is the surgeon who performs the operation, in full. Learn more about the Blue Fin Vision® Advantage.
