Why ICL Surgery Costs More Than Laser Eye Surgery

2 min read

Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery is structurally different from laser eye surgery, and the cost difference reflects this. Laser reshapes the cornea; ICL involves implanting a bespoke medical device inside the eye. The financial model therefore shifts from platform-based to device-based.

The bespoke implant

ICL lenses are individually manufactured from biocompatible collamer material. Each lens is customised to the patient’s anterior chamber depth, white-to-white distance and refractive power. This single-use implant, meaning a new lens is manufactured for each patient, is the largest cost driver.

Intraocular theatre pathway

ICL requires a sterile operating theatre, intraocular instrumentation, and theatre governance. This increases overhead compared with laser suites.

Diagnostic intensity

Sizing requires detailed anterior segment imaging, vault prediction modelling, and endothelial cell assessment. These diagnostics exceed the requirements of corneal laser.

Typical UK ranges

ICL typically costs £3,500-£5,500 per eye, reflecting the implant, theatre environment and long-term monitoring.

Clinical suitability

ICL is often preferred for high myopia, thin corneas, or when laser would compromise corneal biomechanics.
