Why Surgical Efficiency Is Built on Preparation, Not Speed

< 1 min read

Efficient cataract surgery begins long before the patient enters theatre. Accurate biometry, ocular surface optimisation, correct intraocular lens selection, and careful case selection reduce intraoperative uncertainty.

High-efficiency surgery is a system outcome: standardised checklists, instrument readiness, clearly defined team roles, and contingency planning. When preparation is weak, hesitation and unnecessary manipulation follow.

Patients often see only the operative minutes, but most of the work that prevents complications happens upstream.

What this means for you

  • Good preparation reduces intraoperative improvisation
  • Ask about pre-operative optimisation steps

Question to ask

  • “What pre-operative checks do you use to reduce uncertainty on the day of surgery?”
