What causes foamy tears?

< 1 min read

Foamy or bubbly tears often indicate problems with the oily layer of the tear film, usually from eyelid gland dysfunction.

Typical underlying issues

The meibomian glands in the eyelids produce oils that stabilise tears. When their secretions thicken or become abnormal, bubbles can form.

  • Meibomian gland dysfunction related to blepharitis or rosacea
  • Chronic dry eye with increased blinking and tear mixing
  • Long-term contact lens wear affecting tear quality
  • Use of certain eye drops or make-up along the lid margin

Symptoms and management

Foamy tears often accompany grittiness, burning, and fluctuating vision. Treating the glands improves comfort.

  • Warm compresses and lid massage help unblock glands
  • Regular lid cleansing reduces inflammation
  • Lubricating drops and dietary omega-3s may support tear quality
  • Specialist treatments like thermal pulsation are options for stubborn cases
