What is keratoglobus?

< 1 min read

Keratoglobus is a rare condition where the cornea becomes extremely thin and bulges forwards in a more uniform, globe-like shape.

Effects of keratoglobus on vision

The extreme thinning makes the eye more vulnerable to injury, even from minor knocks. Vision is often blurred due to irregular focusing and high astigmatism.

  • Symptoms may include glare, ghosting, and difficulty seeing clearly
  • Thinning tends to involve the entire cornea rather than one area
  • There is an increased risk of corneal rupture with trauma
  • The condition may be associated with connective tissue disorders

Treatment and protection

Management focuses on protecting the thin cornea and improving sight. Early specialist care helps plan safe options and reduces the chance of sudden complications.

  • Protective eyewear is strongly recommended for daily activities and sport
  • Specialist contact lenses can sometimes improve visual clarity
  • In severe cases, corneal graft surgery may be considered
  • Regular monitoring checks for further thinning or new symptoms
