Is PresbyMAX surgery suitable after retinal laser?

< 1 min read

PresbyMAX may be possible after retinal laser if the retina is stable and visual potential remains good, but retinal health remains the priority.

When it may be appropriate

Laser often secures the retina.

  • Previous peripheral laser for lattice or small tears now well healed
  • Stable retinal status on repeated examinations
  • Good central acuity with minimal macular involvement
  • Presbyopia significantly affecting daily tasks
  • Agreement from a retinal specialist that additional corneal surgery is reasonable

When caution or avoidance is better

Significant retinal disease limits gains.

  • Macular oedema, degenerative changes, or extensive scarring
  • History of major retinal detachments with guarded prognosis
  • Need for ongoing retinal interventions that take precedence
  • Uncertain visual potential making elective laser harder to justify
  • Often, non‑surgical or lens‑based options are preferred in such cases
