Pinguecula removal treats a small yellowish bump on the white of the eye that becomes irritated or cosmetically bothersome when drops alone are not enough.
When pinguecula removal is considered
Pingueculae are localised thickenings of the conjunctiva often related to sun and wind exposure. Many cause little trouble and are managed with lubricating and anti inflammatory drops, but surgery is sometimes advised for frequent inflammation or significant cosmetic concern.
- Usually performed under local anaesthetic as a day case
- Lesion is carefully excised from the surface tissue
- Sometimes a small graft is placed to promote smooth healing
- UV protection stays important after treatment
What to expect after surgery
The eye will look red and may feel scratchy or sore for a week or two while the surface repairs. Vision is usually only mildly affected during this period.
- Regular drops reduce inflammation and help comfort
- Sunglasses and avoiding dusty, windy environments aid recovery
- New lesions can still develop if sun exposure continues
- Contact the clinic if pain, discharge, or light sensitivity increase sharply
