Vision after external DCR surgery is usually only mildly affected, mainly by swelling, ointment, and tearing in the early days.
Short-term visual changes
The operated side may feel watery and slightly blurred at first. Bruising and ointment can make focusing harder, especially for reading.
- Blur is often worst just after applying ointment
- Tearing can smear the vision temporarily
- General focus and colour should remain broadly normal
- Report sudden double vision, dark shadows, or strong pain urgently
- Many everyday tasks remain manageable with care
Longer-term stability and comfort
As tearing reduces and swelling settles, vision usually feels clearer and more stable. The eye surface often becomes more comfortable than before surgery.
- Vision commonly feels settled within two to four weeks
- Dryness or watering may still cause occasional fluctuations
- Glasses prescriptions rarely need immediate change
- Arrange a routine eye test once healing is complete
- Seek review if blur persists or worsens instead of improving
