Can I shower after ptosis surgery?

< 1 min read

Careful showering is usually allowed a day or two after ptosis surgery. Protecting the incision lines from strong water jets and rubbing helps them heal neatly.

Showering in the early days

The upper lid is delicate and often stitched along the crease. Gentle techniques reduce the risk of disturbing the repair.

  • Turn your back to the shower and keep direct spray off your face.
  • Use a flannel to clean your face, avoiding the incision area.
  • Do not rub or pick at scabs or stitches.
  • Pat around the eyes dry with a soft towel instead of wiping.
  • Follow instructions about keeping tapes or dressings dry.

Resuming normal washing routines

As the wound seals and stitches are removed, washing becomes easier. Your surgeon will confirm when full face washing is safe.

  • Gentle cleansing with mild soap is usually allowed after about a week.
  • Avoid very hot, steamy showers that may increase swelling.
  • Reapply ointment or drops after washing as directed.
  • Seek review if redness, discharge, or wound separation appears.
  • Good hygiene supports smooth scars and comfortable lids.
