Can I shower after oculoplastic surgery?

< 1 min read

Careful showering is usually allowed a day or two after oculoplastic surgery. Keeping the wounds dry and clean helps prevent infection and supports good scarring.

Showering safely at first

The skin around your eyes is delicate and often stitched. Gentle habits reduce the risk of disturbing the repair.

  • Keep your back to the water and avoid direct spray on your face.
  • Use a flannel to clean your face, avoiding the incision lines.
  • Do not rub or pick at scabs or stitches.
  • Pat the area dry with a soft towel instead of wiping.
  • Follow any instructions about keeping tapes or dressings dry.

When you can wash normally

As the wounds seal and stitches are removed, you can gradually resume usual washing. Your surgeon will confirm safe timing.

  • Gentle face washing with mild cleanser is usually allowed after about a week.
  • Avoid very hot, steamy showers that can increase swelling.
  • Apply ointments or drops again after washing, as directed.
  • Seek review if you notice redness, discharge, or wound gaping.
  • Good hygiene supports a neat final scar.
