Can I exercise after YAG laser iridotomy?

< 1 min read

Light exercise is usually safe soon after YAG iridotomy. However, it is wise to avoid strenuous activity for at least a day or two while the eye recovers.

Early activity

Gentle movement helps circulation and comfort without straining the eye. Listen to your body and stop if symptoms worsen.

  • Short walks and gentle stretching are generally fine.
  • Avoid heavy lifting, intense aerobic workouts, or inverted yoga poses immediately after treatment.
  • Do not rub your eye during or after exercise.
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect against wind and bright light.
  • Stay well hydrated, particularly if you take pressure-lowering tablets.

Returning to your usual routine

Most people can gradually resume normal exercise within a few days. Your glaucoma specialist may give more tailored guidance based on your pressure and overall health.

  • Increase intensity slowly and monitor for pain, haloes, or blur.
  • Contact sports and activities with risk of eye injury may need extra caution.
  • Protective eyewear is sensible for racquet and ball sports.
  • Seek urgent help if you notice severe ache, nausea, or sudden vision loss.
  • Discuss specific fitness goals at follow-up appointments.
